Stanley Cup Riots by David Lang

Defgrip contributor David Lang has a very impressive photo series on his site from the riots that went down in Vancouver yesterday after the Vancouver Canucks lost the final game of the Stanley Cup Finals to the Boston Bruins.

“On the 15th of June 2011, the Vancouver Canucks hockey team lost 4-0 to the Boston Bruins in a much-anticipated final round of the Stanley Cup 2011 series. Riots broke out quickly as the Vancouver Police Department struggled to control the crowds. People were injured, cars were overturned and set alight, and shops were broken into and looted. It was gut-wrenching to see this deplorable mob behaviour cast an ugly mark on the night and the city.”

Blazeguard Trailer

John Thomson from Vancouver has been working on a full length DVD titled Blazeguard and recently uploaded an amazing trailer for the video. There are some serious riding clips in the trailer along with some really well shot lifestyle and b-roll stuff. Based off the quality of the trailers and the talent in the video, you know this DVD is going to be damn good!

Xavier Encinas

Xavier Encinas is a designer and photographer based out of Paris with a wonderful minimal aesthetic. It’s interesting how much presentation plays into showcasing your design work, and in the case of Xavier, he’s go the presentation down pat. Not only does he have great work to show, he works with great people (like AndrĂ© Pinces) to help him show it. With clients like Nike and The Lab Magazine and an emphasis on print design, Xavier Encinas’s work is definitely worth a look.

Travis Collier Test Shots

Travis Collier by Harrison Boyce - Click to enlarge

Travis Collier, David Lang and I were out riding the other day and I threw together some clips I shot of Collier. The day started out with no intentions of filming an edit or anything, but the light was good, the spot was nice, and Collier was feeling it, so we banged out a few clips!

The Dark

The Dark is a Vancouver based artist that does some amazing work with oil pastel’s. Along with his pastel work, he has some great collage/mixed media and stencil pieces.

Lifetime collective

I just had the pleasure to meet the guys over at lifetime collective yesterday as part of a project I am working on, and I have to say I was super stoked to hang and get to know these guys a little bit, super inspiring group of individuals, who are all very talented! I got a sneak peak at next years line, and I have to say I’m pretty damn impressed!

The process is as important as the product. Our clothing is inspired by the communities we live in, the places we travel to, and the people that surround us. While based in Vancouver, Canada, Lifetime exists as part of a much larger international movement to promote the passion and creativity long-driven by artists, musicians, skateboarders, snowboarders and free-thinkers of all sorts.

Also check out the beautifully done film for the 2010 line coming out by motion picture collective Salazar after the jump, you’ll be impressed!

Art And Sole

Art and Sole is a group art show that opens tonight (Saturday, October 3rd) at El Kartel in Vancouver in conjunction with PF Flyers. The concept for the show was to take a pair of PF Flyers Center Hi’s and do whatever you want with them, resulting in some extremely creative and very different results. To go along with the project is a book showcasing each artist and the shoe they created. The book will be distributed all over to different PF Flyers retailers and it will also be available at the opening tonight.

Continue reading to check out a bunch of images of the shoes (including a pair I did!) and if you are in Vancouver, make sure to make it to the opening at El Kartel!

Jeff Hamada Pecha Kucha

Our friend Jeff Hamada from Booooooom spoke at Pecha Kucha Vancouver, where you have 20 slides and 20 seconds to talk about each slide. His presentation is pretty funny and definitely worth checking out. My favorite slide is the Stegosaurus playing saxophone wearing jeans… haha!
