[RE-UP] All Defgrip Originals

defgrip, originals, ruben alcantara, greyboy, cory nastazio, oakley, interviews, bmx, video

Are you new to Defgrip? Just started checking the site over the last year or 2? Well, time to catch up on some sweet original content our crew have produced. If you’ve been with us since the beginning, there’s no harm in revisiting these again. Either way, we appreciate ya.

Harrison Boyce and Andrew McMullen have sat down with some interesting BMX & NON-BMX characters for video interviews starting back in 2008. These interviews were pretty different for BMX at the time and I think they did a good job at connecting you with these people (I didn’t produce them so I can say that, ha). Subjects include Ruben Alcantara, Cory Nastazio (probably the most talked about Original), Greyboy, The History of Oakley and much much much more…

ESPN Stranger Interview

Tunney just dropped an interview with Rich Hirsch about Stranger over on the ESPN site. It’s a good read and Rich drops a little more insight on what the company is about and what’s going on with it in the future.

Check it out on ESPN.

Stranger Site

Rich just put up the Stranger site. Peep it HERE. I had fun clicking through that header.

Defgrip Original – Rich Hirsch

Rich Hirsch is someone I was always interested in when I was younger. He was one of a handful of pro’s that were blowing up in the Northwest when I was really getting into riding, and he always seemed to have some sort of project going on. Whether it was a clothing company or a video, Rich knew how to keep himself busy.

Now Rich is still riding, but is looking at life much differently than when I first met him. He started two major brands in BMX that are going stronger than ever – Lotek Footwear, and Fremont Clothing. While his main focus is his companies, he still manages to make the cover of major BMX magazines. Rich is a very interesting person and probably lives his life much differently than you would expect. One thing that has never changed with Rich, is that he’s always got a new project up his sleeve and no matter what it is I don’t think Rich will ever stop surprising us.

Portland in Photos

Andrew McMullen and I took a trip to Portland last week to meet up with a few people, hang out and work on some new video interviews for the site. We had an amazing trip and we really enjoyed Portland. We happened to be down for First Thursday, where all the galleries have their new shows opening and Sierra from Nike took us around for the evening and we got to check out some awesome shows. We hung out with Ryan Barrett, chilled with Rich Hirsch, met up with Mark Lewman at the design firm he’s a partner in, Nemo. We got to chill with Lewman for a bit and he gave us the grand tour of Nemo and while we were there, we saw an amazing photo show by photographer Danielle Levitt who has a book out with Powerhouse. We spent some time with Jordan Hufnagel, spent a lot of time at Powell’s Books and went to a really good show with Barrett and his roommate Adam, who works at Nemo. Adam designed some screen printed posters for the show that were amazing. Nemo has a poster project where every month they take some time out from doing client work and have some fun designing and printing posters. Check out a video for the poster/show we went to for Talk Demonic.

Big thanks to everyone we hung out with and a huge thanks to Aaron Lutze for letting us crash at his place! We’ll be back in March to work on some more contet for Defgrip, but for now, check out the photos from our trip after the jump.

Ride BMX just dropped their 2009 Photo Issue, which has a colorful photo of Rich Hirsch on the cover.

If the cover caught your eye, but you didn’t know why, than you are in luck. I hit up Keith Mulligan with a few questions to find out exactly what is going on with the cover.

Hoang’s Polaroids

Not only is Hoang Tran an incredible bike rider and owner of some of the wildest barspins out there, he’s a super creative kid. He’s going to art school for graphic design full time, and is always filming and shooting photos with the Give D crew. Subrosa just posted up a few of his Polaroids that are definitely worth checking out. (keep an eye out for some incredible art from Rich on the blog as well!)

Check out Hoang’s photos here.
