New Year’s Drive — Photo Dump

Processed with VSCOcam with m5 preset

On the first day of every year, a hundred or so Porsche enthusiasts meet up for an early morning coffee in the Valley and then move swiftly through some amazing empty mountain roads while southern California sleeps.

A special thank you to all who get wasted on New Year’s Eve and make this beautiful experience possible every year.

Here’s an iPhone pic dump for all of you who enjoy Porsches new and old. Pics by (and of) Ryan Fudger, Dave Mavro, Jim Bauer, Brett Rubin, Matt Crooke and yours truly.

[RE-UP] All Defgrip Originals

defgrip, originals, ruben alcantara, greyboy, cory nastazio, oakley, interviews, bmx, video

Are you new to Defgrip? Just started checking the site over the last year or 2? Well, time to catch up on some sweet original content our crew have produced. If you’ve been with us since the beginning, there’s no harm in revisiting these again. Either way, we appreciate ya.

Harrison Boyce and Andrew McMullen have sat down with some interesting BMX & NON-BMX characters for video interviews starting back in 2008. These interviews were pretty different for BMX at the time and I think they did a good job at connecting you with these people (I didn’t produce them so I can say that, ha). Subjects include Ruben Alcantara, Cory Nastazio (probably the most talked about Original), Greyboy, The History of Oakley and much much much more…

Click below to check out all the Defgrip Originals. Enjoy!

Jim Bauer on Petrolicious

jim bauer, petrolicious, porsche, 911

When he’s not working on or doing bike related stuff, Bauer loves wrenching on cars. Is “wrenching” still a current acceptable term to describe working on cars? Anyway… Petrolicious has caught up with Jim to discuss his minty green Porsche.

Check out the Q&A HERE.

Quintin Story Time with Jim Bauer

In addition to adding Raul Ruiz to the team and presenting part 2 of the Imprint Project at Texas Toast, Quintin has also released part one of their Story Time series with Jim Bauer.

Disposed: Quintin in Mexico

Disposed + ODSY VISION

Gary Young, George Boyd, Justin Simpson and Jim Bauer recently took an Odyssey trip to New Mexico to tackle some rails with Jeff Z for a Ride article. Sean Sexton was on hand too, but got hurt early on the trip unfortunately.

Watch the edit above and check out a Disposed feature from the trip by clicking below.

The Heights Holiday Party

I missed this party due to a late flight and the flu, so I had to watch this video a few times. Super fun spot, good crew of people at Quintin and The Heights.

You may notice a lack of Jim Bauer in this video… that’s because he was busy getting staples in the back of his head after clipping it on that grind box.

Also check out the photo gallery from the party.

Win a free couch from ATG & Environment

So the other day Nick and I are having a drink at the bar (and by drink I mean Nick is having a sparkling water, and by bar I mean the actual fully stocked bar in Jim Bauer’s new house) and Nick is running me through a whole gang of photos on his new camera. We come across a moody portrait of a gentleman with a shaved head and substantial beard wearing a military jacket. He looks like one of those dudes in LA who could either be a millionaire or homeless (judge not lest ye be judged) and I say wow that guy looks interesting, what’s his story?

Turns out dude is Italian, owns this furniture store and is a big fan of Nick’s photography and wants to give away one of his sofas on Nick’s other website.

So here we are. To give you an idea of what you’re entering to win, I’ll leave you with an excerpt from Nick, and I’ll leave it at that.

“What’s better than a comfortable, modern chair made in California? How about a comfortable, modern chair made in California, wrapped in rare, Korean War era USMC Mitchell camouflage and FREE. The good people at Environment Furniture and I happen to have just that.”

Do it.

Rust Heap

My buddy Tim approached me like 1.5 years ago to create a cool looking bike to display at his shop UNIV in Encinitas. I made very lazy progress, enlisting the help of friends whenever the thought crossed my mind… a seat cover here, a headtube badge there, until we were done. All my favorite companies contributed (see who after the jump) among which was our friend Matt at The Laboratory who handcrafted a multi-layered textured paint finish that looks exactly like something that just spent a few decades at the bottom of the ocean.

In the end though, it’s just a BMX bike so Jim and I took a morning drive down to UNIV to test it out on the world’s smallest quarterpipe. Click below to see all the photos and read UNIV’s press release.

Mini VS. Porsche

Mini is a rad company with a great brand message that makes pretty cool cars (which unlike any car except for the Pruis, totally defy any sort of social classification) based on REALLY cool cars but with clever marketing and childish speedometers. Porsche is a stubborn brand with a proven race history and a flagship model that even beats the G Wagen when it comes to most consecutive years on a single silhouette. In my humble opinion both companies make fun cars and both companies build their modern models based closely on historic classics which is the strongest and purest form of branding.

I respect Mini’s challenge here but I respect Porsche’s rebuttal even more:

“While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we’ll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces.”

Mini’s second attempt. I like their approach here, poking fun at the modern douchey Porsche driver, but they may fail to recognize the vintage Porsche driver and Porsche’s overall awesomeness.

The real story.

Quintin website up

I’ll keep the Aaron Ross theme going with this… our buddies at Quintin headwear asked me to assemble a BMX team for them, which you can see here at the Quintin website. The team is Jackson Ratima, Jesse Whaley, Aaron Ross, Tim “Wolf Man” Harvey, and Jim Bauer.

Many projects are in the works including signature hats for each guy. More to come on the Quintin blog.

Jim Bauer – Under the Hood

I had the pleasure of putting together a photo feature on Jim Bauer and his 1981 Porsche 911 for Man on the Move.
