REMEMBERING MIKE TAG

mark choquette pic

Mike Tag’s recent passing has definitely been a major blow. It’s extremely sad when somebody has to succumb to a disease, and our thoughts are with Mike’s friends and family.

As I stated before… I did not know Mike personally, but there is a weird connection you feel to someone when you grow up watching them in BMX videos and reading about them in magazines. That’s Mike for me since the mid-late 90’s. Through FBM videos and such, Mike was definitely one of those riders that was just always there, in the scene.

This Mike Tag tribute features words from some of his close friends, as well as riders who were influenced by him. I simply asked them to write the first thing that came to mind about Tag. Click below to see what Ryan Corrigan, Steve Crandall, Chris Doyle, John Paul Rogers, Stew Johnson, Bob Scerbo, Van Homan, Brian Tunney & Leland Thurman had to say.

Rest In Peace to Mike Tag.

Top 10 Defgrip posts of 2011

It’s pretty crazy another year has come and gone… One of my favorite things about New Years is going through all our old posts and seeing what was the most viewed. Like we’ve done over the past few years, here’s a list we compiled featuring the top 10 most viewed posts on the site. As I explained last year, this list is a bit skewed because posts that went up earlier in the year have had more time to gain views, but surpassingly the number one most viewed post was just put up a few days ago… So even though posts that went up earlier in the year might have more time to get views, the list always seems to be pretty spot on.

The best part about this list, is aside from a few posts, everything in the list is either original content, or exclusive content that we worked with brands/people on. That has always been our main goal – to bring the best original content as possible – and it looks like it’s paying off!

Huge thanks to everyone who continues to support the site and everyone that we worked with to bring you the amazing content that we’ve had on the site over the past year. We have lots in store for 2012 and can’t wait for another amazing year!

Keep reading to check out the top 10 and have an amazing New Years!!!

The HUNT “Best Trick” Bonus Edit

After launching The Hunt back in the spring, Pro-Tec came to us an wanted to kick down an extra grand for the rider who really took riding to the next level. We came up with The Pro-Tec Progression Impression Best Trick Bonus for $1000.

While the judges are making their final decisions on the top-ten riders who will be featured in the final DVD, we used their input to cut this best-trick reel and we want you to give us your best picks. This footage is made of up stand-out tricks nominated by the judges and the filmers, and Will Stroud will be looking at your tweets when he makes the final call on who get the cheddar. This is going to be a tough one.

Gabe Brooks Edit / Q&A

When Darryl approached me with idea of hosting a Gabe Brooks Kink edit on here, I said hell yeah! Not only am I aware of Gabe’s abilities, but I know that Darryl wouldn’t put out trash. So here we are.

Speaking of Gabe, one of the lasting impressions of him that will always stick with me, was from the Texas Toast jam. Not only was Gabe taking in all the riding he could, but he also stuck around and helped us break down when most people were gone. I saw him putting tents away, moving stuff and just straight helping anyway he could. Shit like that goes a long way, and didn’t go unnoticed. Even though the Q&A below is pretty gnarly, the dude couldn’t give off a more positive/friendly/appreciative vibe.

Below is a quick Q&A with Gabe that Jay Roe put together.

Name/Age/Hometown:
Gabe Brooks, 24, South Central California.

So you kind of popped back into the scene recently, seemingly out of nowhere. Where were you at and why?
I was incarcerated for murder : )

What type of lifestyle/upbringing and circle of people brought you to the above circumstances?
They Were Gangstas, Dope Dealers and Hustlers!!!

Where did you grow up and what kind of people were you looking up to outside of riding, that kind of lead you down that path?
I grew up smack in the middle of south central Los Angeles and I use to look up to gangstas, pimps and macks!! They were the ones that taught me how to survive. Physically and financially rather.. S/O to sweet tooth.

What brought you back into riding when you got out? Was it something you thought about and missed while away?
The last joe I did, I realized that I couldn’t keep livin the way I did or otherwise, I’ll be in someones cemetery, or locked up for life trying to defend myself and friends.

You seem so focused on riding now, what is it like balancing BMX with the lifestyle you lived outside of it?
It’s weird… Going from trying to take territory, to learning a trick on a bike and channeling my anger on something positive than negative giving me a higher energy. It feels good but odd. I’ve lived 19 years of my life doing stupid shit and I got stupid outcomes.. But that was my life I had to adapt or be weeded out.

One of the first times we hung out, you called someone that answered a cell phone from inside their jail cell. Do you currently have friends and family that are locked up? What’s that like for you and how do you deal with it?
Yeah, I just lost a child hood buddy to the system two moths ago. He has life now for murder. S/O to baby 007. I also have uncles with life and a brother that’s ready to come home after 8 yrs. Life’s been rough and somewhere down the food chain links need to be broken! IT FUCKIN START WITH ME!

I personally feel like you bring a totally fresh and different personality to the Kink family, how is it hanging and riding with the rest of the guys on a daily basis?
They’re just not guys, they’re family. Inspirational riders of people throughout the world, positive individuals, motivators.. I love all of them. They’re my bro’s. And I’ll give anything to ride with them everyday!

Best of Defgrip on Bnqt

Bnqt hit us up to do a “best of” feature on their site covering some of the top content we’ve had on Defgrip. I dug through our Analytics and put together a list in no particular order of the top 10 most viewed pieces of content we’ve had on the site over the past years. Thanks to Bnqt for the opportunity and check out the feature here!

RE-UP: Albert Mercado edit

This edit is worthy of a re-post, along with being opened for embedding. So all you dudes with sites, have at it!!

Shout out to Albert, Andre Gonzalez and Darryl Tocco for this one.

New Defgrip T-Shirts

We (finally) have a new batch of Defgrip T-Shirts out. We have two designs, the Circle logo that you see above, and the Arch (like the Defgrip X Quintin hat), both printed on American Apparel Summer T’s.

They’ll be on our online store by the weekend, but if you want to pick some up now, Dans, Goods, and 2×4 already have them in stock and if you are in the UK, Seventies picked some up, so keep an eye out for them in shops out there!

Interview: Brian Kachinsky

If the term “pro-as-fuck” applies to anyone, it’s Brian Kachinsky. When I sent him this interview for example, he hammered out the bare bones of it immediately while in transit to Wisconsin (he wasn’t driving though, that would have been extra impressive/dangerous) on his laptop. But on top of that, BK has a great image, knows how to represent his sponsors well and has the great riding (and brutal slams) to back it all up. Oh, lets not forget about The Bakery

Click below to check out my interview with Brian Kachinsky.

Thanks to Andrew Brady and David Leep for the pics.
