Tsunami

Culture March, 11 2011
by Nuno Oliveira

On a somewhat dismal but real note, the current earthquake/tsunami that’s hit Japan is as much of a disaster as you can imagine. This was the first event of this kind that I happened to catch live on TV as it went down, and it was crazy. Watching water blaze on shore and barrel through towns was a crazy visual. Our thoughts go out to everyone in Japan.

Boston.com has a bunch of photos that touch on all that’s gone down. Check those out HERE.

Pickpocketing is Dead

Culture March, 11 2011
by Mike Ardelean

I found this fascinating article on Slate by way of You Might Find Yourself, one of my favorites. The article romanticizes “the lost art of pickpocketing” and the work that goes into it, and offers some commentary as to why credit card fraud and identity theft have taken the place of old school thievery.

I’ll leave you with this excerpt from the article which is actually a quote from the 1973 movie Harry in your Pocket:

“There’s no sense of craft anymore,” he tells a promising young stall. “Nowadays youngsters haven’t got it, no patience, no discipline, they don’t want to spend the time to learn. So they … hit some poor old lady over the head and grab her purse. … It shouldn’t be allowed!”
