Q&A: Chris Hallman / Tread Magazine

tread magazine, chris hallman, defgrip,

It’s very possible that many of you reading this have never heard of Tread Magazine, let alone seen one. But during the mid 90’s, this magazine had a very cult-like following and was very sought after (at least to me and people I knew on the East Coast). It was kind of underground, kind of not, tied to the influential Props era and all around just awesome and interesting. I think it would be fair to liken Tread to the Albion for comparison. Tread only lasted 4 issues, but those issues were enough for it to have a lasting effect on riders from that era.

Inspired by a recent Instagram post, I decided to track down Chris Hallman and ask him some questions about the mag. Click below to read it all.

Shoutout to Chris Hallman and a big thanks to Chris Rye for supplying the images.

Live Free or Die

I love that the Albion dudes dropped this video to coincide with the online version of issue 9, as the “Live Free or Die” article with Clint Reynolds (and crew) is one of my favorites. Clint is such a rad, inspiring dude and this article brought all that to life.

You can now read Albion issue 9 .

Under Fire

george marshall photo, albion, bruno hoffmann

Around the 1:16 mark on this Dan Lacey edit, you can see photographer George Marshall running around just after some sort of disturbance in Tel Aviv. Scary shit indeed. George, Dan, Bruno Hoffmann and Rich Forne were all in town working on Dan’s edit and Albion interview. On George’s recent visit to Austin, I was able to point out that I noticed him running around during this intro, and we proceeded to talk about how wild it was during this project.

Anyway, George has posted a nice overspill gallery from this trip on the Albion site. Check it HERE.

Imprint Project – London

imprint, london, george marshall, edwin de la rosa, ricky adam, walter pieringer, jeff zielinski

The traveling photo gallery known as the Imprint project (Through Quintin & Breaks Mag) comes to London this week, and features work from the following:

Walter Peringer
Walter Peringer is a photographer based in Austin, TX. He has completed commercial and editorial assignments on six continents and in more than two dozen countries across the globe. His BMX photographs can be seen
in Ride Uk.

George Marshall
George Marshall is a London based freelance photographer and associate editor of The Albion BMX magazine. In 2006 he graduated with a masters in photography from the University of Nottingham and as an undergraduate exchange student he studied photography at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. George is definitely one of those photographers with The Eye: he gets in there, figures out the shot, takes care of it, and it always comes out a treat.

Ricky Adam
Ricky Adam likes to shoot photos. His current employment at Dig BMX requires him to shoot photos of BMX, but he takes his photography much further beyond the realm of technically accurate BMX riding to capture the reality of life.

Jeff Zielinski
Finding the best new spot to ride for the most epic tricks to be photographed, lies Jeff Z. Part human navigational system and part photographic visionary, he is the go to guy if you want to shoot some polished BMX photos. You can call him obsessive, crazy, over-prepared, or just call him the Associate Editor/Photo Editor at Ride BMX.

Edwin Delarosa
Edwin DeLarosa is a professional BMX rider turned photographer who has uninhibited eye for the streets. His images capture the life around him and the energy of NYC

Print Ad: Subrosa

From Ryan Sher:
Check out our latest print ad in the new issue of The Albion and The Albion US. We ran this ad of our newest Skeleton Crew rider Rich Forne from a recent Subrosa trip to Barcelona and it is as crazy as it looks. It’s a gap to the wall from the small bank, and a huge gap out over the bike racks. Rich took a few runs figuring out the first gap and the speed and just sent it! He took a rough slam, but still got it clean. You’ll see that in G.U.T.I. SOONER than later. Rich rules!

This reminds me, you should watch THIS again.

Take a Long Toilet Break

The folks over at the Albion are starting to release their back issues free online. So if you haven’t been able to acquire one, now’s your chance. There’s plenty of great articles/interviews to catch up on, so get crackin. The Albion is unlike any other BMX mag (for better or for worse), so get into it and enjoy.

Issue 1 HERE, and subsequent issues dropping every Monday morning for the next 9 weeks.

Will Smyth Discusses DIG Magazines Future Plans.

courtesy of DIG

DIG recently sent advertisers a private email informing them of the magazines future re-launch plans. These plans include a shift in editorial direction, magazine size and making it available free through bike shops (while still being available on newsstands). These changes will take place with the next issue which will be available in September, and each issue will be treated as a “special edition” and follow a central theme.

I’m a super DIG fan and look forward to whatever they’re cooking up.

To avoid any misinformation on all this, I hit up Will Smyth (DIG’s founder) with some questions about it all. Click below to check it out.

Seth Kimbrough

The Albion have a great series going on their site called “Drip Tray”, which consists of overspill photos from previous articles that didn’t make the mag. Photos from Seth Kimbrough’s feature dropped today.

Interview: Edwin De La Rosa

Anytime there's some new Edwin stuff, I automatically want to see it. He is one of my favorite riders, no questions asked. His style and approach to street riding is one to be admired, but hopefully I don't have to tell you that. He is as important to street riding as pegs are.

Needless to say, this interview seems way overdue, but the timing couldn't feel better for me.

United: Downtime Trailer

Heres’s a trailer for “Downtime”, which will be United’s new DVD. It will be available free with the next issue of the Albion, as well as online via the United site and various outlets on Dec 25th. Looks awesome.

Between mid January and the end of June 2011, following the release of our most recent full length DVD ‘This Is United’, we rented a small vacation apartment in Huntington Beach.

During this time, team riders from our pro, am and world teams flew out to visit, ride, relax, film some clips and soak up some of that Californian lifestyle.

Nathan Williams, Ryan Lloyd, Corey Martinez, Alex Valentino, Ashley Charles, Ryan Metro, Luke Peeters, Geoff Slattery, Roy Van Kempen, Dan Boiski, Jimmy Rushmore, Christian Rigal, Kye Forte, Leo Forte, Dean Hearne.

This month we featured a shot of Subrosa pro rider Kyle Hart in Austin, Texas. Our boy Tristen Afre or Gutstains to his closest friends shot the photo for us. The ad also features the Subrosa Pandora bars and forks in out new Army Green coloway and was published in Ride UK, The Albion, BMX Plus!, Ride BMX, and Soul BMX mag.

We also have an alternate angle gone wrong posted up on the site.

Here is Suborsa’s latest print ad. This was featured in Ride U.S., The Albion, Ride U.K. And BMX Plus. The ad shows off our new Gravedigger Tire and Subrosa pro rider Mark Mulville. We hit up this cement box jump in an abandoned Range Rover Dealership. Mark and I got this photo down right before the Florida sky split open and dumped on us. We also almost got struck by lightning. It all worked out in the end. Get some new tires.
