Hanson Little VS. America

hanson little

Hanson Little has ventured out of his hometown and hit the open road on an exciting open-ended adventure of sorts, and I’ve been enjoying his photos and stories from along the way very much.

I suggest you follow him on Instagram and Tumblr to keep up to date. Visit the Radavist to learn more while you’re at it.

I’m happy to present you with the 4th installment in our “VS.” series.

The idea for this series is basically to do an ongoing interview of sorts, where the previous interviewee goes on to interview someone of their choosing. Previously, Jay Roe interviewed Joe Rich, and now Joe has chosen to interview Empire’s Tom Williams.

Q&A: Walter Pieringer vs. Jay Roe

walter pieringer, jay roe, defgrip Q&A, bmx

When Brian Yeagle contributed his recent interview with Walter Pieringer, he inadvertently kicked off a project I've been meaning to start for some time.

The idea is basically to do an ongoing interview of sorts, where the previous interviewee goes on to interview someone of their choosing. So Brian Yeagle interviewed Walter Pieringer, and now Walter has chosen to interview Jay Roe.

Click below to check that out.

Enjoy!

Q&A: Brian Yeagle vs. Walter Pieringer

walter pieringer, brian yeagle pic, defgrip, 1

Brian Yeagle has graciously contributed this travel based Q&A he did with Walter Pieringer, along with some photos that he’s taken throughout their travels together. There’s no doubt that Walter likes to “dive in” when it comes to traveling. Continue reading to check it all out!

Shout out to Brian Yeagle for the submission.

++

It’s difficult to think of persons you have traveled with more than once and had not at some point become agitated toward that person for something trivial or significant during that time together. It is with greater rarity to be able to name someone who has been an itinerant comrade a few times over and say truthfully that they have always made the experience richer, more pleasant, thrilling and basically were also the decisive element in making the whole thing possible from the start.

Every time I have traveled with Walter Pieringer he not only engages every bit of action that arises but also takes many steps to initiate interesting experiences for himself and his companions. His oversized woodshop-style glasses might lead you to believe he instructs teenaged Texans day in and day out making birdhouses and mailboxes; until the moment comes when you observe his prodigious employment of the Iphone and camera making quick work of any logistics and capturing images of unmistakable authorship. His command over these tools as well as others can easily leave one nonplussed and very appreciative when falling under the rendered benefits. From traipsing around Tokyo to a failed motorcycle ascent of a volcano in Ecuador, my admiration has grown for his draw to the unfamiliar and the necessary skills he’s cultivated making it possible to bring any concept into actuality.

I made an inquiry into his venturesome lifestyle and wanted to share some portraits of Walter I have made during our time traveling together.

-Brian Yeagle

People vs. Places

36070805706

Timothy Burkhart hit us up to let us know about a project he’s been working on with fellow photographer Stephanie Bassos called People vs. Places

“This double exposure project allows us to step back from having full control of the image making process and trust in one another while allowing coincidences to happen naturally on film. Stephanie exposes a full roll of 35mm film of only “people,” and Timothy reloads the film again into the same camera, to imprint only “places” and locations to the same roll. These images are all the end result of our ongoing series and are unedited negatives straight from the camera.”

Check it out here and keep reading to check out a few more images.

Not sure if I’ll ever get sick of Nardwuar interviews. Another classic with ASAP Rocky.

iPhone 4S vs Canon 5d MKII

*deep breath* Here we go: a side-by-side video comparison test between a phone and a DSLR. Vimeo user Robino Films set up both ‘cameras’ as above, with the iPhone exposure-locked and the DSLR’s shutter speed, frame rate, exposure and picture style mirroring the phone as closely as possible. Click here for more details on how the test was conducted.

Considering the iPhone 4S features a f2.4 lens, and that third-party manufacturers keep developing more add-on lenses for the phone, it’s only inevitable that one day we just won’t be able to tell what the hell anything was shot on anymore. Hit the jump to watch the frightening but also liberating video.

Mini VS. Porsche

Mini is a rad company with a great brand message that makes pretty cool cars (which unlike any car except for the Pruis, totally defy any sort of social classification) based on REALLY cool cars but with clever marketing and childish speedometers. Porsche is a stubborn brand with a proven race history and a flagship model that even beats the G Wagen when it comes to most consecutive years on a single silhouette. In my humble opinion both companies make fun cars and both companies build their modern models based closely on historic classics which is the strongest and purest form of branding.

I respect Mini’s challenge here but I respect Porsche’s rebuttal even more:

“While your challenge seems like a fun and lighthearted campaign, we’ll stick to racing the way we have over the decades. We welcome you at Sebring, Le Mans, Daytona or any other sanctioned race where there is more at stake than T-shirts and valet parking spaces.”

Mini’s second attempt. I like their approach here, poking fun at the modern douchey Porsche driver, but they may fail to recognize the vintage Porsche driver and Porsche’s overall awesomeness.

The real story.

KEEGAN GIBBS VS. SALT WATER

Keegan Gibbs (who runs a sweet photo blog and shot this spread of Augor) just posted some pics from a recent trip to Bali, where he accidentally dropped his (cheap) film camera into salt water.

Click HERE to read about it and check out the results. Nothing too crazy, but they did come out with an interesting vintage feel.

Chances are though, if you tried this on purpose, you would surely have nothing come back, haha…

Hedi Slimane Vs. YSL

ysl

Famed fashion designer Hedi Slimane has been getting a lot of recognition for his photography over the past few years and after leaving his lead design position at Dior, that seems to be all he’s been doing. He has a personal site that he updates quite regularly and his images are pretty amazing. This past year Yves Saint Laurent passed away and his art collection (valued at approx $440 million!) is about to go up for auction. Most of it is displayed at his Paris apartment and Hedi Slimane had the chance to photography the YSL estate in November of last year. I really love how close up Hedi gets with a lot of his shots and he creates some amazing patterns with the way he frames the images.

Check out the series here.

Defgrip X DVS shoe Auction for Mike Aitken

Over the passed few months, I had been working on a little shoe project with DVS. We initially started working on concepts using DVS’s Carson shoe (a nice standard shape with a vulcanized sole, but have decided to move to a different model). In the design process I received two sample from DVS, and we will be auctioning one of them off to help raise money for Mike Aitken and his family.

The shoe is a one-off sample, so it’s a size 9. Check out the auction here. The shoe is starting at $40, so get your bid on and help a fellow BMXer!

Click here for the auction and check out a bunch of photos of the shoe after the jump.

The person who posted the blog, Jakob was on the train in New York and just happened to see the actor who plays PC in the commercials… He didn’t really think much, but then PC pull out an iPhone… So rad! Check out a photo of PC using the iPhone taken by the ISO50 crew.
