The History of Oakley

This past year, I got the chance to go down to the Oakley headquarters in California to check out the re-issue of the infamous B-1B grip that Oakley was working on. While I was down there, I took the opportunity to put together a video giving a little history and background to the brand. Oakley is a company that does a billion dollars a year in sales, has stores all over the world, and has created some of the most iconic eyewear of my generation… and I’m pretty sure not many people know that Oakley started out by making BMX grips.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Mike Bell, a former AMA Supercross champion and employee of Oakley who started in 1985, to tell the story of how Oakley went from a small grip company to one of the biggest eyewear brands in the world.

Nigel Sylvester in Japan

Gatorade has spent many years researching and understanding what goes on in traditional athletes bodies when they are doing their sports. Whether it be hydration levels or information about how their body reacts to the most intense moments, Gatorade and their sport scientists have a pretty good idea about what’s going on with—like I said—their traditional athletes… Action sports on the other hand, that’s a totally different story.

This year, Gatorade’s theme is “Go All Day.” In celebrating that theme, Gatorade wanted to start doing research on the non-traditional sports like BMX, so they hit up Nigel Sylvester, who rides for Gatorade and asked him a pretty crazy question: If you could go anywhere in the world to ride bikes with his friends, where would you go? That’s a very heavy question to ask someone, even Nigel… so after lots of research and different ideas being thrown around, Japan was chosen as the destination! With it’s huge city, amazing architecture, and lots of un-tapped spots, Japan would be the perfect location.

To document the trip, Gatorade invited a few key BMX media outlets, including Defgrip, to go along for the ride. The video you are about to watch documents the trip from the riding and research, to the culture and adventures and to coincide with the video, we will have a photo gallery with a more detailed story going up next week!

Huge thanks to Nigel and Gatorade for putting this trip together and we hope you enjoy the video!

Gettin’ Nostalgic With Chris Doyle

We are super excited to present part 1 of “Gettin’ Nostalgic” with Chris Doyle. Put together by Will Stroud, who grew up with Chris and basically documented their entire lives on BMX. Chris and Will took a trip back to the infamous 401 trails, where they spent countless hours on their bikes along with guys like Ryan Barrett and Cory Muth.

Mixed with lots of amazing old footage, this piece gives you a great look back on a set of trails and a group of riders that not only made an impact on eachother, but have influenced the sport of BMX on so many different levels.

Keep reading to check out part 1 of Gettin’ Nostalgic as well as some great words from Chris Doyle!

Defgrip Original – Ruben Alcantara

I had the great opportunity to visit Malaga, Spain and stay with Ruben in February. While I was there, I had a few requests to do an Original with him. While the trip was work related I wasn’t sure if I was going to have the time or not to make the interview happen, but right at the last minute before Ruben took me to the airport we sat down for a half hour and made it happen! I’m real happy we squeezed it in!

Ruben is a legend in his own regard, having made a heavy impact of the current style of riding as well as the type of bikes we ride and being responsible for some of the most influential video parts of our generation. Ruben is not only an amazing rider, but an amazing person and I have been a fan since I can remember!

Defgrip Original – Adam22

A lot of people on the internet talk shit. Most of the shit talkers use fake names, sit at home and never do anything about the stuff they are talking shit on. Well, Adam Grandmaison, or as many of you know him as “Adam22″, is not that person.

Plagued with two straight years of injuries and nothing to do but talk shit on the internet, Adam decided to start a blog called The Come Up, because rather than posting comments and threads in other peoples forums, he wanted to create a voice of his own. After a quick three years, The Come Up has turned into what can easily be called the most followed BMX site on the internet, and Adam has positioned himself as one of the leading voices in the sport. Love him or hate him you can not deny the work Adam Grandmaison has put in and only respect what he has created.

Defgrip Original – Rich Hirsch

Rich Hirsch is someone I was always interested in when I was younger. He was one of a handful of pro’s that were blowing up in the Northwest when I was really getting into riding, and he always seemed to have some sort of project going on. Whether it was a clothing company or a video, Rich knew how to keep himself busy.

Now Rich is still riding, but is looking at life much differently than when I first met him. He started two major brands in BMX that are going stronger than ever – Lotek Footwear, and Fremont Clothing. While his main focus is his companies, he still manages to make the cover of major BMX magazines. Rich is a very interesting person and probably lives his life much differently than you would expect. One thing that has never changed with Rich, is that he’s always got a new project up his sleeve and no matter what it is I don’t think Rich will ever stop surprising us.
