Texas Toast Jam by Brandon Means

texas toast jam, defgrip, austin, odyssey bmx, brandon means

Another Texas Toast Jam has come and gone, and what a sweet time it was. Considering the amount of rain we received the week prior (the dirt jumps were literally flooded), I’d say the whole thing ended marvelously. It was great seeing people from around the world descend upon Austin for the jam once again.

Brandon Means was in town for Toast (ice to finally meet you bud) , and he graciously contributed a bunch of pics from the weekend. Click below to check them out.

Photogallery: Defgrip on UP

Jeff Icepick Mackinac

So, about a month ago, I put together a trip for some of us midwest guys: Jeff K, T.J. Henderson, Rob Diquattro, Ryan Wayne, Nick Wilbat, Anthony Loconte and myself to head out on a four day adventure to camp around Lake Michigan. We didn’t go into the trip thinking it would be 100% riding and I don’t think any of us wanted or needed that anyway.

Poler helped us get outfitted with some camping gear, as pretty much none of us were experienced campers and most of us had little to no camping experience. As with any trip nothing goes exactly as planned and time constraints didn’t’ allow us to get in everything we wanted and we definitely didn’t get to ride as much street as we would have liked, but that didn’t keep anyone down. We all had a blast and laughed the entire trip, especially from all of Rob’s antics and newly acquired front brake skills on a bike nearly half the size of his own.

Click below to scope out some snaps from the trip and be on the look out for a trip edit to drop later this week filmed by Anthony Loconte.

Q&A: Joe Rich VS. Thomas Williams

joe rich, tom williams, empire bmx, terrible one, interview, defgrp

I’m happy to present you with the 4th installment in our “VS.” series.

The idea for this series is basically to do an ongoing interview of sorts, where the previous interviewee goes on to interview someone of their choosing. Previously, Jay Roe interviewed Joe Rich, and now Joe has chosen to interview Empire’s Tom Williams.

We’ve written down 100 random questions and assorted topics, all of which are unbeknownst to our victims. We will be asking people to pick 20 random numbers from 1-100 and then supplying them with those questions/topics to answer. Who knows what might come up!?!?!

Up next, Portland's own Shad Johnson.

Dreamline: Photogallery / Assorted Facts

brian hunt, red bull, dreamline, justin kosman pic, defgrip

This official Dreamline video is really well done. Instead of jam packing it with everything that went down, you get some cool insight and stories from a bunch of people along with some choice riding footage. I know the video thumbnail could possibly make you overlook it, but don”t skip this one.

In addition, Justin Kosman came through with a bunch of extra riding/lifestyle photos he had from the event and below are some assorted facts (Thanks Luke Seile & Ilana Taub).

- Course Length: 1200 feet
- 1500 man hours for the build
- 20,000 tons of dirt
- 65,000 lbs of heavy machinery on-site
- Pitch of Mountain: 12%-15%
- Elevation of top of course: 9700 feet (highest signature series, higher elevation then Utah and Ultra Natural)
- Top speed of athletes: 38mph
- Biggest jump: 14 feet (transition to lip)
- Highest air (bottom of jump to athlete height): 29 feet
- Angelfire dirt is special because of it”s clay to dirt ratio, makes a perfect texture to build and sculpt when water is added
- It took four months to find this location and we looked at over 20 different Mountains

INTERVIEW: MIKE “ROOFTOP” ESCAMILLA

rooftop, defgrip, mike escamilla, interview, bmx

It”s been a minute since we’ve had a nice big feature interview on the site, and I’m happy to change all that with this new piece on Mike Escamilla. Mike ( AKA Rooftop ) has had a powerful and interesting BMX presence for some time with plenty of video parts and photos to prove it. Never one to bite his tongue while simultaneously probably putting his foot in his mouth, it”s always interesting to hear what Mike has to say. His riding and history says the rest.
