Opinions: Deciphering Web “edits”, “videos”, “parts” etc…

When our friends at Ride BMX released word about the new NORA CUP for “web video part”, it sparked a discussion within the OTX office regarding the difference between web “videos”, web “edits”, web “video parts”, promos, what should be considered what and if there’s even a difference at all. I’ve seen lots of opinions regarding BMX on the web over the years, so I figured this would be a fun topic to delve into.

With that said, I hit up a handful of riders, videographers and industry folk to ask them the following:

In your opinion…

Is there a difference between a “web video” and a “web edit”? If so, describe how the terminology differs?

Should something labeled “web video part” be part of a full video, or can it be a standalone thing?

If a rider releases a new solo 2 minute (or so) collection of kick ass footage online, you would classify this as a…?

If someone releases a “one night at House park with the homies” thing, you would classify this as a…?

If a full length video that’s been in the works for 2 years, has proper art direction and production value is released FREE online, is it considered a “web video” or just a “video”?
What would you describe Fiend’s “FIENDING” as?

Does a projects method of distribution (physical DVD or online) affect your opinion?

Can product promos that feature great riding mixed with product info and images also be considered web edit/video/parts? Or are they just “promos”?

Throughout the peice, new designations pop up, opinions differ and uncertainty lingers among some. Pretty interesting.

Q&A: Will Smyth Discusses DIG’s New Direction

Dig site 2

DIG BMX as you have come to know it is changing. How? Well, after 21 years the actual print magazine has ceased to exist and all energy is being redirected online. This new direction may or may not come as a surprise these days, but it is surely a welcome change.

I have always been a huge fan of DIG and I’ve got my fingers crossed that they can continue doing what they do in digital form. With that said, there is a new site and new staff in place to tackle such changes. As always, I threw Will Smyth (DIG’s editor) some questions about it all. Continue reading and stay tuned to DIG BMX.

X Games Austin has come and gone, and I must say that I rather enjoyed the new location and setup. It was convenient, easy going and a nice change of pace for X. I got to see some old friends, met some new ones, drank lots of water and acquired a farmers tan.

Click below to check out a gallery of photos I shot from 4 days on the ground and lurking around the place.

Enjoy!

ALYK X ANYTHING Lookbook

Stickers

aNYthing recently worked with BMX crew Act Like You Know. – on a lookbook showing some of aNYthing’s Spring gear, as well as ALYK’s new collection. The lookbook was done to coincide with the release of Act Like You Know’s third DVD – filmed over the last 3 years – and the release of aNYthing’s Spring line. Both are available on respective websites.

aNYthing has always stood for people doing their own thing – and we are pleased to say that the Act Like You Know. crew are part of our family and we fully support their creative endeavors. Since day one, Act Like You Know. has been about creating a way of their own for their friends, building a genuine aesthetic, and doing it all themselves. Using a completely DIY mentality – their 3rd, completely independent, full length BMX video – NO DAYS OFF! – just released on Monday. DVD’s are accompanied with a full-color newsprint zine, made in Queens, NY. The Act Like You Know. clothing was designed with the help of Omens (MSK/Villians), Soviet (NSF), Curve (NSF/ TGE) and Lil Kool. In their 9 year history, Act Like You Know. has accomplished and produced more that most companies with a legit budget, and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Photogallery: Chase Hawk / Oakley

chase hawk, joe simon, oakley, bmx, nuno oliveira photo

When Chase Hawk asked if I’d be down to tag along and snap some photos while he and Joe Simon filmed for an Oakley project, I said “yes” faster than I could put on some Frogskins or Enduros.

So… off we went, early morning ’til night. I shadow’d Chase and Joe as the whole thing went down and casually snapped away. Watching both of these guys put in work was awesome and I think the video came out damn good, which is what I expected. Joe had the whole thing story-boarded and Chase repeated tricks on demand like a G.

With that said, click below to eyeball some behind the scenes photos of Chase’s Oakley video courtesy of yours truly.

Justin Kosman @ Random

We got a hot tip on a big square pool out east, about half way to Vegas. Dak, myself, Gary Young and Calvin Cosovich packed up the car with brooms, buckets and bikes and headed out into the barren wasteland on the I-15 and followed our directions to this perfectly bone dry square pool with a little bit of over vert in the deep end and pretty amazing pocket airs. There were a bunch of old dirt bike tires everywhere and they ended up being featured very prominently in one of the action photos we shot with Dak in the pocket for one of his next Vans ads. You’ll see soon enough.

Later that day we ended up at some antique store that had a bunch of Nazi war memorabilia and I ended up with a stack of old surfer magazines from 1983 for two bucks each that are still keeping me entertained with the most kooked out ads and blonde mustaches you could ever imagine. Calvin was the filmer that day and he had a blonde mustache as well. That’s what made me think of all this. I can’t grow a mustache so I hang out with guys that can.
