Money Ain’t a Thing

This article in the NY Times blew me away (found via You Might Find Yourself — read the the abbreviated version there).

The author Jay Caspian Kang follows 21-year-old millionaire and online poker champion Daniel Cates around for a few days, watches him win and lose millions, and generally takes in the kid’s outlook on the whole deal. Unlike most poker superstars who win big dough at big tournaments with the help of big luck, Daniel Cates made his million by “grinding”, which is described as “the process of pressing a skill advantage over an extended period of time”.

Daniel spends his life in front of the computer, which has resulted in killer poker skills, but also kind of detachment from real life that allows him to say things like “You can do anything with $10 million. Like, you can buy a house and still have around $5 million left over.” He admittedly struggles with human interaction, and does not think it a bit strange to be a millionaire sharing a condo with roommates and eating most meals at The Cheesecake Factory.

Here he gives a look into the mentality:

“Most of us young kids who play at nosebleed stakes don’t really have any clear idea about the actual value of the money we win or lose,” Cates says. “Most of us see the money more as a points system. And because we’re all competitive, we want to have the highest score. But really, we don’t know what making $400,000 or losing $800,000 means, because we don’t have families or whatever. This blind spot gives us the freedom to always make the right move, regardless of the amount at stake, because our judgment isn’t clouded by any possible ramifications.”

Cry Baby

If you’re a guitarist/musician or just a music fan, than this is for you. Lot’s of notable people discussing the famous wah-wah pedal in a well put together documentary.

From Joey Tosi’s Vimeo page:

Cry Baby: The Pedal That Rocks The World tells the story of the wah wah effect pedal, from its invention in 1966 to the present day. Musicians, engineers, and historians discuss the impact of the pedal on popular music and demonstrate the various ways it has been used, as well as how its evolution has improved the ability of artists to express themselves musically. The film features interviews with Brad Plunkett, the inventor of the pedal, plus many other musical luminaries such as Ben Fong-Torres, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Buddy Guy, Art Thompson, Eddie Kramer, Kirk Hammett, Dweezil Zappa, and Jim Dunlop. These professionals explain how a musical novelty transcended convention and has become timelessly woven into the fabric of modern pop-culture.

Tsunami

On a somewhat dismal but real note, the current earthquake/tsunami that’s hit Japan is as much of a disaster as you can imagine. This was the first event of this kind that I happened to catch live on TV as it went down, and it was crazy. Watching water blaze on shore and barrel through towns was a crazy visual. Our thoughts go out to everyone in Japan.

Boston.com has a bunch of photos that touch on all that’s gone down. Check those out HERE.

Pickpocketing is Dead

I found this fascinating article on Slate by way of You Might Find Yourself, one of my favorites. The article romanticizes “the lost art of pickpocketing” and the work that goes into it, and offers some commentary as to why credit card fraud and identity theft have taken the place of old school thievery.

I’ll leave you with this excerpt from the article which is actually a quote from the 1973 movie Harry in your Pocket:

“There’s no sense of craft anymore,” he tells a promising young stall. “Nowadays youngsters haven’t got it, no patience, no discipline, they don’t want to spend the time to learn. So they … hit some poor old lady over the head and grab her purse. … It shouldn’t be allowed!”

If you are a movie fan or consider yourself knowledgable about movies, than this site/game is for you.

A Day Made of Glass – Corning

Here’s Corning’s look at the future. On one hand our lives look so much easier and more efficient because of the technology; on the other hand these people don’t go five seconds without touching a screen and the wife can’t even leave the driveway before swiping the navi ten or twenty times.

I like that the video tries to diffuse the predictable “no one has real conversations anymore” response by focusing on how their technology can help you stay in touch with the grandparents and hang with your kids in the morning and have so much time to spare that you can make breakfast from scratch, but dang. Can the future please have a little more style? The daughters’ uniforms indicate that future families will be able to afford private school, but the dad’s 1/4 zip fleece indicates that all the technology in the world can’t give you taste.

Rooftop’s 2010

Rooftop put together an amazing recap video with all the random stuff he’s filmed over the past year. Even though it’s pretty much identical to my life… You know, going to Iraq, skydiving onto tropical islands, etc. it’s cool to watch it from someone else’s perspective… haha. yeah right! This video is so awesome. I’ve already watched it three times. Check it out! (via TCU)

With over 400,000 views in only seven days, there’s a good change you’ve already seen this video, but if not, it’s definitely worth 30 minutes of your day. Filmmaker Andrew Wonder follows urban historian Steve Duncan around the New York city underground. Carroll Shelby

Defgrip reader Reed Avery tipped us off to this amazing interview with Carroll Shelby. In all honesty I’m an auto enthusiast but have never been extremely bowled over by any Shelby automobile, as fast and notable as they are, they just seemed lacking in personality and class when compared to European cars. Not that I haven’t been impressed by them; I’ve just never worked them into my future budget the way I would a, say, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing or even a Ferrari 400i.

One thing Carroll Shelby is not lacking, I came to find, is personality and class. Whether you’re a Shelby fan or have never heard of him, I guarantee that if you watch this interview you will be blown away by the heart and soul that Carroll Shelby has put into his career, as well as the standards by which he lives his life and runs his business.

It’s an overdose of one-liners and inspiration and wise words to live by, from a dude that is days away from being 88 years old, and is still at the top of his game. Click here for the interview.

Jay-Z on OWN

Came across this profile about Jay-Z on Hypebeast yesterday. With the new year, brings Oprah’s new network OWN. One of the series they will be producing for the network is titled ‘Oprah Presents: Master Class‘ and it will be profiling some of the most influential people in the world. Kicking the series off is a really great piece on Jaz-Z. Most of the topics they covered Jay has talked about already, but he has some great quotes in here and it’s definitely a motivating pice… great way to kick off the new year and help you get your ass back in to gear.

Scrapbook 2010: Nuno Oliveira

Since this year is coming to a close, I figured I would post a little gallery of photos that I’ve set aside throughout the year. You may recognize a few of these from previous galleries here, but the majority of these pics are new. As with my personal site, there’s a random mix of stuff in this “scrapbook”. Enjoy!

A big shout out to everyone I know and to every new person I’ve met this year.

Lagerfeld on Luxury

Even though the interviewer looks like Dimitri Martin playing a joke, this interview with Karl Lagerfeld is awesome. And even though he ironically admits to personally avoiding technology during an interview about how great the present (and the future, and technology) is, I think his point about the subjectivity of opinions on time periods in general is on point. Big picture. I like this guy.

Found on the Red Wing blog (bookmark it). Click below for the video.

Bonus: Me dressed as Karl for Halloween 2009.

Surely you can’t be serious…

Leslie Nielsen has passed away at 84 due to complications with pneumonia.

I grew up with movies like Airplane and Naked Gun, which are both classics in my opinion. This dude definitely makes me laugh.

R.I.P.

QUADS: NEW YORK CITY

Haha, this is nuts. Glen PP Milligan just sent this through. Mad respect to dudes doing wheelies on the highway. I just had crazy flashbacks after watching this.

From Glenn:

A few years ago I produced a four wheeler DVD. One of the segments featured people who ride 4 wheelers in NYC. I always wanted to re-edit the section with a better track. So here it is. It was all filmed on a SONY DVX2100, BOLEX 16mm and a really crappy mic. This is real street riding and these dudes are crazy.

Win a free couch from ATG & Environment

So the other day Nick and I are having a drink at the bar (and by drink I mean Nick is having a sparkling water, and by bar I mean the actual fully stocked bar in Jim Bauer’s new house) and Nick is running me through a whole gang of photos on his new camera. We come across a moody portrait of a gentleman with a shaved head and substantial beard wearing a military jacket. He looks like one of those dudes in LA who could either be a millionaire or homeless (judge not lest ye be judged) and I say wow that guy looks interesting, what’s his story?

Turns out dude is Italian, owns this furniture store and is a big fan of Nick’s photography and wants to give away one of his sofas on Nick’s other website.

So here we are. To give you an idea of what you’re entering to win, I’ll leave you with an excerpt from Nick, and I’ll leave it at that.

“What’s better than a comfortable, modern chair made in California? How about a comfortable, modern chair made in California, wrapped in rare, Korean War era USMC Mitchell camouflage and FREE. The good people at Environment Furniture and I happen to have just that.”

Do it.

W Magazine Documentary

W Magazine was recently re-vamped by the lead of the new editor Stefano Tonchi. To give you a glimpse into the new style and direction of the magazine, W has produced a short documentary about the changes and what’s to come. The film gives you a great look into how a magazine is produced and the people that are behind each issue. You can check out the documentary on the W website.

A little late on this, but I’ve been away.

Seems like Nick is closing down shop after issue 9. Zine lovers stock up!!

Vimeo Couch Mode

I just got done poking around Vimeo Couch Mode, which Vimeo just launched today.

As the name implies, Couch Mode allows you to watch Vimeo on your TV while chilling on your couch (or any other seat I presume). One major thing though, is that you need Google TV, which I don’t have or know anyone who does. Otherwise, you are stuck to the desktop version, which isn’t that bad.

From Vimeo:
Couch Mode is optimized for Google TV and will be available in the Spotlight section soon. Don’t have a Google TV? No worries, Couch Mode will work on your desktop too. However, we use a lot of HTML5 and CSS3 technology for this (no Flash!), so at the moment it will only work on Chrome and Safari.

Click HERE to check out a sample video. From there (if you have a vimeo account), you can go to “my videos” and check out your stuff bigger and sweeter.

After first inspection, this seems pretty cool, but I don’t really spend all that much time on Vimeo for this to make me do naked cartwheels down the street. This does seem to be a cool function though.

The 22 Counties

This is awesome. Everything about this edit says good times to me and brought a smile to my face.

Great job. Bonus comedy points for the Sasquatch arm.
