STEVE CRANDALL @ RANDOM

bikesml.jpg

The “Ghost bike” is kind of a cyclist shrine/memorial that gets put where cyclists have been killed by motorists.

The first pic I shot while riding down the street in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and the second is a street corner a block from my house that I ride by nearly every day. Cyclists that get hit by cars is fucking Gnarly, so I won’t go into Details. The stark white imagery is erie, but hopefully reminds people to lookout for cyclists.

Keep your eyes peeled folks….

Magazine Review

november_magazine_thumb.jpg

I’m pretty addicted to magazines. I’m not sure where it came from, but I’ve been like that since I was a little kid. I can remember spending time in the library in elementary school, I can remember looking at magazines more than books,. Just flipping through the glossy photos, enjoying the articles and getting really excited when I discovered a new magazine. This love has followed me through life and I still spend hours at the bookstore just flipping though as many magazines I can get my hands on. Magazines bring some of my favorite aspects of design together; editorial design, typography, as well as photography and great writing.

With everyone spending so much time on the computer, I feel there is a definite loss of appreciation for a great magazine, so I’m going to start a new monthly post where I review the magazines that I have recently picked up. I definitely go though phases, so my magazine choice will probably range a bunch, but it should be fun. I’m going to aim to get the post up while the issues are still on news stands, but this first one is a few weeks late… The next one should be up soon though… Check everything out after the jump!

New MacNeil stuff

sl_orange.jpg

I just updated the MacNeil site with a bunch of new products and a new range of seats. Instead of doing specific colors for each seat model, we have four different colors that are available on all the seats, giving you a nice range of options. Along with all the new products, we are going to have a few contests up on the site very soon, where you’ll have the chance to win some product before it’s even out, so make sure to keep a look out for that.

LEVAN UPDATE FROM SANDY CARSON

jimmy_dumpster_ride.jpg

Hey Y’all,

Just a quick update on Jimmy’s progress and his fund raising so far since his accident. The good new is that Jimmy has been progressing pretty well since he came out of his coma last week, and sounds better each time I talk to him on the phone. He has been transferred from the ICU at Morristown Memorial Hospital to the JFK Brain Rehabilitation Institute and is up, shuffling around and piecing his memory back together. It’ll be a long road to recovery, but we are lucky that he is in the best rehab center for his injuries and has great friends behind him.

The bad news is that Jimmy’s insurance WILL NOT cover his rehab program which he just checked into. The estimated total of the rehab bills is estimated at $70,000 at least, and that’s coming out of his family’s pocket.

As you know, EmpireBMX is matching donations to the Jimmy fund and now Odyssey is matching what Empire matches, so we are talking tripling whatever you donate!

The Empire fund match ends at the end of the business day on Friday so if you haven’t donated to the fund already, now would be the time to do it!

If any of you have websites or blogs, feel free to post any of this information and photos to help Jimmy out, we have to give this total a shot!

Here’s the link to EmpireBMX to donate

Thanks a million to all the people who have been visiting Jimmy and helping out with donations and fund raising.

Stephen Meszaros @ Random (round 2)

stephen_meszaros_thumb.jpg

While digging through old photographs that have been sitting on my hard-drive for months now I came across this one of Dave Tucker 60/40 grinding a flat rail behind some chain of retail stores. This photo may not be perfect by any respects, but for the number of attempts that I was almost killed on sitting underneath him I think it’s worth sharing. Right to my back is a wall, the spot that I wanted to shoot from of course, Dave came so close to landing on my ankles on various attempts. For some reason I used three flashes and still couldn’t get the lighting I wanted, but non the less he grinded the rail perfect every time. Thankfully on the final attempt I didn’t crop out this monsters head and came away with a decent grab, even if it looks like a feeble. Every time I shoot I realize how awesome it is that kids are pushing themselves, wether its on some flat rail at midnight or at some fucked up jam at a local spot. Enjoy.

Mercedes S400 Bluetec Hybrid Concept

s400b

I read an article in my favorite magazine recently which talked about Mercedes as a brand, pointing out their long-standing success across the board: killing it in the ultra-high performance category with the
SLR Mclaren, the luxury market with the Maybach, and the green market with the Smart. It also made reference to the company’s commitment to (or at least awareness of) the environment, even years ago when they were the first to introduce diesel-engined passenger cars.

Now they are taking it to the next level with the S400 Bluetec Hybrid. Normally I’m the first to point out that the S-Class is a barge, but with 265 horsepower and 465 ft-lb of torque, this car gets 40 mpg and has enough power to tow a cement truck.

Mercedes first introduced Bluetec in California with a lease-only (apparently California law prohibits sales of diesel passenger cars, but not leases) E-Class a while ago, but now with the hybrid feature on top of that already-green engine (the E-Class Bluetec won the World Green Car award this year) we’re getting closer to having the best of both worlds. If the S400 Bluetec were available right now, it could really bang Toyota over the head… but it’s not coming out until 2010, and by that time Toyota will probably have a Prius doing 400 mph and running on urine.

Read all about the S400 at the World Car Fans website.
