Font Shop

This is my new favorite design related site… I have no idea why it took me so long to get into. The site is Font Shop and they have an amazingly complete font library, design editorial and an incredible font navigator. The navigator is a visual pick and chose system, where you chose all the elements of the typeface or style you are looking for and it will pull up everything that falls under your category. Aside from all that, they have a great newsletter/ blog. It’s not updated everyday, but the articles are pretty rad. One example is they chose five or whatever best typography in magazines, went though each magazine, talked about the fonts they used and then linked to the font page, so you can check it out or purchase it. There are so many more great features, so if you are into design at all, definitely check the site out - www.fontshop.com

COMPLEXITIES…

This may be a couple days late/old, but whatever, ive been away and its not posted yet.

Be sure to check out the new issue of COMPLEX which features a write up on Jamie Bestwick. He is featured as a “complex individual” along side musicians and actors, which is cool.

This issue also features the photo shoot we mentioned a while back that Mike Rooftop was a part of.

Hit up your local newstands/book stores and check it out.

Sandy Carson Autophoto

For me, Sandy Carson has always been in BMX. Never was there a time where he wasn’t around. Road Fools 1… Come on! He has been around the world, god knows how many times and ever since the first time I saw Sandy on a bike, he had a camera somewhere close by. Sandy has shot photos for everyone in BMX, but has been a huge contributor for Dig over the years. His work has also graced the cover of Vice as well as numerous other magazines. Sandy went through a bunch of his photos, published and unpublished, a hooked us up with a great Autophoto.

Check out Sandy’s Autophoto here.

New Orchid Site

The Orchid crew just launched a new site. Whoever put it together knows their shit. Nice flash site, but not over done. Simple, clean, and very functional. If I am not mistaken it looks like their team has been downsized a bit. None the less, I’m psyched to see a fresh site. I hope the Little Devil site is following soon.

Meet Mike’s Peeps, part 2

Welcome to round two. Say hi to my friend Rob Bei. Rob is a surfer dude. He owns and rents homes up and down the coast of SoCal for the sole purpose of surfing prime locations. When he’s not surfing, bro-ing, walking his dog Hank, beach cruising, or surfing, he’s putting intestines back inside of people, sewing up faces, performing tracheotomies, and generally saving lives every day as an exceptionally proficient ER doctor. Needless to say, Rob is a walking contradiction and that’s exactly what you’re going to find a lot of here at Meet Mike’s Peeps. What I like about Rob is that he’ll go to work, sew somebody’s limb back on, then fly to the Fijian Islands to surf a 15 foot wave, and still freak out about how cool BMX is.

I’ll leave you with a few quotes I’ve heard out of Rob’s mouth over the last week…

“Dude, I cut this lady’s chest open and puss flew everywhere.”
“I opened Hank’s food bin this morning and a possum jumped out!”
“Man, I know Huntington Beach is devoid of culture but I’m gonna get an apartment there just for the waves!”
“No worries, Bro!”

… And a photo of Rob and Hank catching a wave. Yes, they are on a surfboard.

Undefeated Billboard Project

If you live in LA or are familiar with the Undeafeated store, then you’ve undoubtedly come across their Billboard Project (they recently featured a really cool tribute to the late J Dilla). A few days ago the Undefeated website finally went up, giving us some insight into the ever-changing art that it displays.

It’s pretty amazing to be driving south on La Brea and see a huge billboard with no ad, no eyesore garbage, just a striking piece of art hanging out above the Undefeated, Stussy and Union stores. This sums it up best:

“The Undefeated Billboard Project is a unique collaboration between Undefeated, Aaron Rose and Nike. Perched above the Undefeated location on La Brea in Los Angeles, California the Undefeated Billboard Project is a reflection of our store and the culture it represents. It takes the work of both fine artist and street artist and places it in an area where it normally wouldn’t be displayed. This collaborative effort lends for a stunning addition to the visual landscape of Los Angeles.”

Go HERE and check out the Billboard Project. Click each artist name (check out Dennis Hopper’s contribution!) to see their installments, and then place your cursor on it to read about each artist.
