I just returned from a trip to Taipei for the Taipei International Cycle Show. The Taipei show is basically like Interbike in Vegas, but less exciting, possibly more buisness and definately no cool booths from your favorite bike brands.

This was my first trip over there, so I will try to break it down.

Essentialy, company heads come to the Taipei show to meet with the vendors of their products, talk complete bike specs, search out a company to manufacture a certain product and to meet with international distributors among other things. I was mainly catching up with international distributors (for Odyssey) and speaking with different people about complete bike specs. This is the side of bmx that’s rarely seen or mentioned, and frankly, it doesn’t really need to be. I ran into a bunch of people from various bike companies there on business, and we all got to chat a little to break up the day, which was good.

Let’s face it, a large percent of the bike parts you ride, are manufactured in Taiwan ( and yes, even some from “American made” brands), which is why people come here, from all disciplines of bike riding. Alot of work gets accomplished.

Onto the city…

Some observations:

“101″ Building (in the photo)- The tallest building in the world (or so I hear). It has 101 floors, get it?? It is a great looking buidling, inside and out. I assume it’s largely office space, but the bottom half is a mall with your basic high end shit like Prada, Gucci etc…, needless to say, I only really went there twice. The second time was for food.

Scooters- People mostly commute on scooters, since traffic could get hairy. They are all over. I accidentaly took an escaltor down a floor in the above mentioned mall, and stumbled onto “scooter parking”. Imagine a parking lot, but filled with scooters.

Sketchy street food vendors- No offense to the people, but there was some stuff that just didn’t look sanitary. I will leave it at that. Oh, and 7-11’s there have a tub of boiled eggs for your picking. Yummy.

Surgical masks- A lot of the locals walk around (and scoot around) wearing surgical masks. My guess is that’s due to the smog, and you probably don’t want to be inhaling dirty air and exhaust while cutting off pedestrians on your scooter.

Politeness- As in, people seem to really want to help you (at restaurants, stores, hotels etc..). They will actually hustle at times, as opposed to giving you the stink eye as if you are bothering them at their “job”.

With all that said, the highlight of the trip was watching some dude trying to exit a booth and walking right into a clear plastic wall. It was hilarious. Luckily there were enough people who saw that to make it even better.

    In Japan those surgical mask are worn by ill people with the flu or a cold to protect the others from their germs. I guess it’s the same in Taiwan.

    the masks are for the smog. those bus’s and trucks belch black smoke right at head level it seams. Taipei is pretty ratty but the rest of Taiwan (east ans south) is actually nice.

    from what I have heard from other manufacturers is that taipei can get pretty crazy.

    the street food stuff scares me in the US let alone in a foreign land….
    when you have chicken blood running through the streets and down the drains …. that can’t be good.
    I think wearing a surgical mask to control the germs one is carrying is the least of their problems when it comes to health concerns.

    It’s all functional! I’ve been here close to 3 years now, and believe me when a bunch of mini skirts leaves the club for a little late night vendor action, your sanitation worries will subside…Hahaha, It all works , come join the fun ! And check Teddy’s site up there…
