Nomadic Buffoonery

Artist, designer, lady magnet, and stunt biker Travis Collier has a new tumblr going called Nomadic Buffoonery. It’s a great glimpse into the wonderful and strange things that Travis comes across in his life and I can’t wait to see more of the wild stuff he thinks up. Some of the pictures definitely caught me off guard on first glance, like this picture of a parking lot mammoth creature. Or the above one of the cat. What the hell is going on? And… where is that?

Also while on the subject of bmxers on tumblr, don’t forget to subscribe to another photo tumblr we at Defgrip thoroughly enjoy – De La Rosa.

GOBLIN

So…. where to start with Tyler, The Creator.

Without boring you with wordy fluff, I’m just gonna cut straight to the point and say that nothing has piqued my interest in Hip-Hop land in recent years as much as this dude (and his OFWGKTA crew to a lesser extent). While we are constantly bombarded with cocaine rap and other general cliche rap stuff, Tyler and Odd Future rolled up outta left field.

I first started noticing the OFWGKTA (odd future wolf gang kill them all) acronym late last year, but only started really investigating earlier this year after continuing to notice a bunch of press. At first it was intimidating because the whole Odd Future thing was kind of like Wu-Tang, with a bunch of members and you didn’t know what was what or who was who. Nevertheless, it’s all pretty simple to figure out. As far as I’m concerned though, Tyler is the dude. THIS GUIDE will teach you everything you need to know.

To me, Tyler is part mysterious, part punk rock, part unfiltered teenager that has the wild lyrics and the energy to back it up. I guess all that combined is what ultimately drew me in. Originality!!!! If you think about early Eminem, than you have somewhat of an idea about what Tyler’s stuff is like. Don’t get me wrong though, Tyler’s stuff is waaaay harder. A warning, you should probably go into his music knowing that it’s tongue-in-cheek and if you are easily offended AT ALL, you should probably just listen to your Taylor Swift album instead.

GOBLIN, Tyler’s 2nd album (or first real one depending on how you look at it) falls just short of being a super-duper home run for me, but I’m still crazy about it. There’s just a few slow songs that I could personally do without, but the album is fuckin’ sick. There’s a Doctor/Psychologist theme throughout GOBLIN (similar to Tyler’s first album BASTARD) that ties it all together, and I suspect you will get something new from this album each time you listen to it. It’s not simple or status quo. I suggest downloading BASTARD first before getting into GOBLIN too. Get your Google on.

I know Tyler and O.F. are still relatively small, but I feel like they’ve gained popularity super quick. Like I mentioned before, there’s countless articles on them, they are on covers, performed on Jimmy Fallon and are on the radar of every “cool guy” out there. The music is not pop or easy to digest, which just adds to my confusion about it all. Either way, I’m stoked. Either these dudes are the greatest manufactured act of all time, or just what people need right now. I’m going with the latter.

I’m curious to hear peoples opinions on all this, let me know in the comments.

Photogallery: Nike-The POOL

As you may or may not know, the Nike POOL contest went down this weekend in England. The event was held at the soon-to-be demolished Dagenham Swimming Pool which Nike converted into an amazing wooden playground. It looked like quite the feat and I don’t recall hearing the riders say one bad thing about the course.

A lot of the world’s best riders were in the house and the level of riding was unreal. The riding was inspired, dialed, big, smooth and it was a treat watching people find all the lines. I don’t know what it was about this particular contest, but I feel it was THE best contest I’ve ever personally attended. There was a moment towards the end when I recall asking someone “what is going on at this contest?”. I’m sure a lot of people were thinking the same thing, it was just plain good bike riding on another level.

Furthermore, This POOL setup will be open to the public for 30 days after the contest for anyone to enjoy.

Assuming you’ve seen most of the riding and videos on Ride BMX and such, here is my take on the POOL comp as I lurked around for 3 day with my camera. Click below to check out some pics along with some random facts about the contest. Harrison will be handling video duties, so check back in a week or so for that.

Thanks to Nike for bringing Defgrip out and for putting on a successful event.

Multitasker: Darryl Tocco

Recently while watching the Bad Timing promo, I literally thought to myself, “Damn, Darryl Tocco is a sick multitasker” after his first clip. Instant Feature!!! By “Multitasker”, I mean a great rider who doubles as a filmer/editor (or vise versa), which Darryl is.

With that said, I rounded up some assorted topics for Darryl to elaborate on. Click below to check that out.

Thanks to Keith Terra for the pic.

Nike Pool Info

More info on the Nike POOL event has just come in. Harrison and I will be on hand for this, should be sweet! Look forward to seeing everyone out there.

Nike – The Pool

Nike presents The Pool – a project that transforms an ex-local authority swimming pool in Dagenham, East London, into a world class BMX park. We’ve drained over 1.5m litres of water and set to work on creating something very special, but riders of all abilities need to be quick as this fantastic building is set for demolition. The Pool will be free to ride, take lessons or just watch the action with local school sessions starting 16th May. The 4-week programme of core events, community interaction and beginner workshops run through to Sunday 12th June with bikes, supervision, pads and helmets available for those who need them.

To launch The Pool we have invited 10 world class riders to choose 3 of their crew and show us what they’ve got for a share of a €25,000 purse. With an incredible array of lines on offer, this invite only event will present a new competition format and demonstrate the unfeasibly high standards that BMX park and street riding have reached in 2011. The first shots of the completed park will be revealed in the final teaser edit on Wednesday 11th May, where we find out once and for all what happens at The Pool.

Team captains: Garrett Reynolds, Dennis Enarson, Harry Main, Jason Phelan, Alex Kennedy, Ruben Alcantara, Brian Kachinsky, Drew Bezanson, Van Homan and Sebastian Keep

Free open public sessions at The Pool:
21st and 22nd May
28th May – 5th June
11th and 12th June
