Photogallery: Texas Toast Jam

I can best describe Odyssey’s Texas Toast Jam as some sort of large scale local jam/BMX festival. I think the combination of those two sums it up pretty well. There was a pretty standard dirt comp going on, but every thing else was pretty non-standard (but that was the best part). Once people got on site, they knew they were in for an interesting time.

Despite the heat (did you know it was hot in texas?) and windy conditions, I can’t help but feel that this jam was refreshing and just plain fun. I’m pretty sure everyone left with a smile, especially after Mike Aitken’s run. Click through the photogallery to see what I mean.

Mike Dytri on Breaks of 10

My old friend Mike Dytri is one of those “never not working” types that gets you pumped to go accomplish things, and on top of that I love the irony of him being such a “design guy” that you’d never know that, just for fun, he’s also a MMA killing machine.

I met Mike back in early 2000 when he was doing all of the creative for MOSH, which was a cool time because he was exposing all of us BMX kids to some fun stuff… introducing us to the staff at Big Brother, having our ads shot by fashion and skate photographers, and hooking us up with free custom-made, shrink-wrapped graphic tee shirts from his line Subfreakie.

Most recently, with his brand Ludwig Van, he’s collaborated with Vans to make an interesting run of shoes that have gone over quite well.

Read a quick interview with Mike at Breaks of 10.

Good Morning Gravity: Niki Croft

Richard Forne put together this intense look into Niki Croft’s recovery/crash from last year, as a Relentless short story. Richard always puts in good work, and this is no exception. Shouts to Richard and Niki for reaching out to us with this.

From Richard:

On the 10th of October 2010 Niki Croft suffered a near fatal crash at the London Cycle show.
He was put into a medically-induced coma that should have lasted five hours but he did not
wake for two days. When he woke his memory was shattered.

This is the fragmented story of his accident and recovery since the crash.

Nigel G Shock Commercial

I don’t know how it happens but we always seem to do a bunch of posts on Nigel at the same time… This G Shock commercial dropped a few days ago and I’m super stoked on it. Nigel worked with photographer and filmmaker 13th Witness to put together a commercial for G Shock. This is definitely a quality edit that needs to be watched in 1080p full screen. Check it out!

Devon Hutchins dives in…

If you enjoyed my gallery from the POOL, than you will surely be into all the pics that Devon Hutchins just dropped into his Flickr. Good stuff.

As Devon puts it:
This is my take on the Nike contest that went down at the Dagenham swimming pool. No flashes just a high ISO and about 6 beers deep. Enjoy.

Check out the set HERE.

Fleet Foxes – Helplessness Blues

Over the last couple of weeks, the main albums in my rotation have been GOBLIN and the new Fleet Foxes album. Both of these albums couldn’t be any more different, but I’m equally stoked on both.

Even though I’ve heard of Fleet Foxes before, I never actually heard them. No idea what they sounded like. When I bought the new album, I basically judged a book by its cover. I picked up the CD and thought “wow, cool cover and text”, I then turned it over to some pics of the band and thought “these look like some proper musical hippies”. That’s all, done deal.

I’m glad I picked up Helplessness Blues, because it’s a great album and definitely musical. It’s full of big soaring melodies and has an overall mellow vibe.  Perfect for early mornings or rainy days kinda thing. Furthermore, the music breathes and doesn’t sound too digital or overproduced.  Quality stuff for sure.  If you’re into folk-y indie stuff, check out this album

It’s not often I come across albums good enough to write about here, but this one is definitely worth it.

The POOL – The Full Story

Here’s the official Nike POOL edit. Hadrien Picard did a good job of putting this together from beginning to end. Like I said before, this event was unreal riding wise and concept wise. You will see a bunch of the wild shit that went down in here.

-

The Pool was more than a BMX comp, it was one of the most extra-ordinary gatherings of the BMX community this century.

From the draining of a soon to be demolished local authority swimming pool in Dagenham, East London, into a world class park in less than two weeks was a feat in itself, but to see the diversity and level or riding on display at the launch event was truly remarkable.

40 international riders with a brand new team format saw non-comp riders, veterans, street destroyers and park animals all throw down into something far better than we could have dreamt of.

Winning Team:
Dennis Enarson, Chad Kerley, Josh Harrington and Jeremiah Smith

Best Line: (Awarded to Ruben’s team)
Ruben Alcantara, Kevin Kalkoff, Sergio Layos, and Tom Dugan

Best Rider: (Rider’s choice)
Dennis Enarson

Best Trick:
Brian Foster – Gap to curved wallride out of the deep end

The Pool is free to ride until the 12th June 2011

The Last Holeshot

Help kickstart the last issue of Holeshot.

-

To keep our approach fresh, issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials produced by Holeshot’s main contributors and friends. Since its beginning, Holeshot has generally taken the form of a normal 5.5″x8.5″ zine format. To celebrate the end of the zine though, issue 9 will be a box set of zines and materials from Holeshot’s contributors and friends. Included in each box set will be a multitude of zines, photographs, DVD-R, and BMX ephemera. Our working edition is 250. The end result will be a box that resembles a book that can be shelved. Currently, our contributors and their respective projects are:

Andrew Burton Hyde Pride Zine – Interviews, photos, and more relating the to great skatepark located in Hyde Park, Massachusetts.
Chester Jones – Blazeguard
Kyle Emery-Peck – set of 10 color and black and white 4×6 photographs
Jake Honesto – Bears
Matt Gaspar – Hangn Brain 2 – Holeshot’s funniest contributor. Responsible for the famed Hank Hill bikecheck, Beetlejuice Trail Digger drawing, Evolution of Osiris D3′s article.
Vinny Martin – North Park
Nick Ferreira – TBD
and more to be disclosed

There will be no advertising in Issue 9. Instead we are hoping that our readers and prospective advertisers can help us reach a modest goal of $500 to cover some of printing, packaging, and shipping costs. If you have already subscribed, this issue will be sent to you free of charge. Do not feel obligated to donate, unless of course the spirit moves you. All backers will receive a gift. You can see all of those details at the Kickstarter page.

Nike Chosen Trailer

This looks promising.

The Last Iceberg

Camille Seaman has been working on her series ‘The Last Iceberg’ for a few years now, and every update is somehow better than the last. Shot in Greenland and Antarctica, Seaman states that the series “chronicles just a handful of the many thousands of icebergs that are currently headed to their end. I approach the images of icebergs as portraits of individuals, much like family photos of my ancestors. I seek a moment in their life in which they convey their unique personality, some connection to our own experience and a glimpse of their soul which endures.”

Seaman couples strong artistic theory with jaw-dropping photography. It’s really quite hard to put into words just how incredible these photos are, and it’s very sobering to think that these once-gargantuan stretches of ice are now lonely blocks in our oceans.

Her website scales to your browser size, so I highly recommend making your browser window as big as it will go and clicking here to check out The Last Iceberg.
