Shanghai 5

Shanghai 5 is a documentary by Charles Lanceplaine about skating in the Chinese city. Anyone who’s been to metropolitan China or has seen recent videos of the country knows that many of the spots there are absolutely phenomenal, and there is still tons of untouched potential everywhere. This rad documentary does a great job of showing not only the architecture and vibe of the city, but also the skating scene that is growing in Shanghai. And it definitely proves one thing for sure – if you ever get a chance to visit China with your bike/skateboard/rollerblades/segway/anything, DO IT!!

Designspiration

Shelby White from Wanken has just launched a new project called Designspiration. Designspiration is an image sharing/bookmarking website that was built of out a need to help fellow students find inspiration. With over 1,000 hours and ten months work of work, this site is thoroughly thought out and very well designed. To give a little background and to put everything into perspective, Shelby has written up a very detailed blog post about the site, the design, and his entire process of building this inspiration platform from the ground up.

Röyksopp – Senior Living

My brother just hit me with a link to a six song music video/short film for Röyksopp’s new album titled “Senior.” The film follows three girls as they explore the ruins and come across child zombies and lots of skulls. Shot in what looks like a crazy blown out war-zone city from Eastern Europe, actually turns out to be Detroit. The IFC website got a few quotes from the directors Noel Paul and Stefan Moore: “We shot it in Detroit because it is exists as a contemporary dystopia.” If you have to see it to believe it, if you’ve never been there. They didn’t do any set dressing either. “All of our locations were filmed as we found them.”

OK Go GPS Parade

Check out this video of OK Go, where they Trick To Get Your Ex Boyfriend Back march through the streets of LA playing music with a bunch of people. They teamed up with Range Rover for this project and I guess they were linked up to some sort of GPS that tracked their paths on a map, forming a big OK GO… It’s pretty rad to see everyone cruising around playing music and it looks great when the sun goes down and the glow sticks are shining. Keep reading to watch the video and you can check out more about the project here.

Project Magazine Design Contest

PROJECT is a brand new magazine for the iPad that was released a few weeks ago. I downloaded the first issue and I’m going to have to say it’s the best iPad magazine that I’ve had the chance to check out… and I’ve been downloading a lot of them recently.

To celebrate the release of the first issue and to get ready for the second, the creators of PROJECT want to give emerging designers the chance to showcase their talent. The challenge is to re-design the front cover of the first issue. The top entries will then be featured in issue 2 of the magazine. The winner will also get to design the front cover of PROJECT 2, released early next year!

The designs are due on December 15th and if you are interested you can find a video with specific instructions here, all the assets here and make sure to submit your designs to the PROJECT facebook page. Good luck!

Nigel Sylvester in Japan

Gatorade has spent many years researching and understanding what goes on in traditional athletes bodies when they are doing their sports. Whether it be hydration levels or information about how their body reacts to the most intense moments, Gatorade and their sport scientists have a pretty good idea about what’s going on with—like I said—their traditional athletes… Action sports on the other hand, that’s a totally different story.

This year, Gatorade’s theme is “Go All Day.” In celebrating that theme, Gatorade wanted to start doing research on the non-traditional sports like BMX, so they hit up Nigel Sylvester, who rides for Gatorade and asked him a pretty crazy question: If you could go anywhere in the world to ride bikes with his friends, where would you go? That’s a very heavy question to ask someone, even Nigel… so after lots of research and different ideas being thrown around, Japan was chosen as the destination! With it’s huge city, amazing architecture, and lots of un-tapped spots, Japan would be the perfect location.

To document the trip, Gatorade invited a few key BMX media outlets, including Defgrip, to go along for the ride. The video you are about to watch documents the trip from the riding and research, to the culture and adventures and to coincide with the video, we will have a photo gallery with a more detailed story going up next week!

Huge thanks to Nigel and Gatorade for putting this trip together and we hope you enjoy the video!

7D 2000 fps

7D 2000 fps from Oton Bačar on Vimeo.

Oton Bačar, who made the much-talked about 7d 1000fps video which has received over 599k views so far, has released another slow-motion edit filmed on his 7d and a 18-135mm Canon kit lens – but this time with renders of 2000fps. The result is crazy. Oton’s imagination knows no bounds.

Some technical details: The super slowmo rain is fake, it was created with Red Giant’s Trapcode Particular 2 in After Effects. And like his previous video, Oton’s skilled use of Twixtor gets this impressive slow motion out of his 7D.

Videos 2010

After watching Anthem 2, it dawned on me that 2010 was pretty awesome for legit BMX video projects.

There was definitely a time when the fate of videos was in question due to the internet, but this year proved different. A company might not sell as many videos as it once would, but good DVD’s are still sought after, well received and I thank brands for continuing to put in the work.

Below, I go over a few videos that stood out for me this year. This is not a be all end all, year end best of videos post (I haven’t seen everything), but just an overview of some notable ones. They are not listed in any particular order.

Feel free to add your input/feedback in the comments.
