DEFGRIP: EXCLUSIVES OF 2010

In case some of you have missed any of the sweet video content we have brought you this year, here they all are in one place.

The videos are embedded from (mostly) oldest to newest, and you will find interviews as well as riding edits. As I was compiling this, I kept being reminded of all the great stuff from this year that I had forgotten about.

Enjoy!

The Heights Holiday Party

I missed this party due to a late flight and the flu, so I had to watch this video a few times. Super fun spot, good crew of people at Quintin and The Heights.

You may notice a lack of Jim Bauer in this video… that’s because he was busy getting staples in the back of his head after clipping it on that grind box.

Also check out the photo gallery from the party.

FBM 2010 PHOTOS / SLIDESHOW

Crandall put together a bunch of photos from 2010, which you can check out HERE. If you click below, you can get a little preview, and there is also a slideshow at the end.

Enjoy!

Mike Mastroni / Volume Edit

I haven’t even watched this yet, and I already know it’s good. Automatic embed.

Substance Vol.3 Catalogue / Zine

Here’s the new Substance catalog from your boys at 4Down. If you want a hard copy, go HERE. An actual catalog will also come with Ride UK # 147.

I applaud 4Down for putting together these sweet catalogs. They’re dope. I’ve seen the real one that came with Ride, and it is indeed rad in print. However, I would rather see a click-through gallery versus these ISSUU flipbooks.

Press Release: Simpel Session 2011

We’ve been working hard on the Simpel Session 11 course design, together with our main man Nate Wessel. After last February’s big success, it was difficult to imagine how it could get any better. But with this one, it is clear that Nate has really outdone himself. We can’t believe how amazing it’s going to be!

Meanwhile, the BMX riders list is filling up with great names and is looking like the best ever line-up in Simpel Session history.
In skateboarding, we’re also confirming details with many top guys from all over the world, and will announce more athletes in the beginning of January. It’s going to be a real treat too, and there are still many surprises to come!

Simpel Session 11 festival will go down on 5-6th of February 2011 in Tallinn, Estonia, as one of the first highlight events of the Tallinn European Capital of Culture 2011 program. This means the contest will feature several side events this year, beside the infamous party program, such as BMX and skate film screenings and themed photo exhibition, setting off already on the 2nd of February.

Simpel Session 11 tickets will be internationally on sale starting from January 2nd. For more info, go to http://www.session.ee/2011/tickets/?lng=en

For riders lists, the latest news and updates, check the Simpel Session website http://www.simpelsession.com or like us at http://www.facebook.com/simpelsession

You can check more angles of the new course design on http://www.session.ee/2011/skatepark/

PS. The course design is subject to minor changes.

Desk

I’ve always been a huge advocate in having a good desk setup. I need a nice wide open space to work and I tend to work so much more efficiently when I am at my own desk. This video (that has been online for almost two years, that I just came across here) focuses on the subject of desks and what they mean to some influential people in the creative world. Along with some good insight how desks effect each person’s creative process, you get to see some great desk setups… Even a re-creation of Einstein’s extremely messy desk.

Photogallery: Fat Tony-East Africa

Fat Tony recently went on a trip to East Africa. Prior to him leaving, I had mentioned that I would be down to post some photos on Defgrip if he was into it. He was, and came back with some great stuff that he was willing to share with us.

According to Fat:
I spent the first two weeks of December traveling through East Africa where I met amazing people, heard incredible stories, and saw unbelievable sights. It will no doubt take me years to process everything I witnessed, and I may never be able to fully explain what my mind and heart went through, but I feel it is my duty to do my best in sharing what I can, so here are some photographs from my journey. Enjoy.

Aaron Ross House Check

Ever wanted to see how a pro BMXer lives? Now you can, thanks to ESPN… They have a dope gallery online with a bunch of photos of Aaron Ross’s new house. After buying his first place and getting all settled in, Sandy Carson went through and documented Aaron’s spot. I’m really feeling the cement floors and I’m stoked on all of Aaron’s artwork! It’s rad to see all of his painting and I can’t wait to see more!

At Home with Amos Burke

“The latest in our ‘At Home With’ series takes a slightly different approach. We spent a day with Amos in his current hometown of Hastings, riding, visiting some spots from famous old videos, talking about his past and what the future might hold, and even manage to bump into Dan Price.

Catching up with Ruben by Joe Rich

Joe Rich interviews Ruben Alcantara about the back problems he’s experienced over the last few years, the unexpected solution he discovered, and the ways it’s changed his outlook on riding and life in general. Featuring an amazing mix of interview and new riding clips, definitely hit that play button for one of the most inspiring edits of the year.

Since this year is coming to a close, I figured I would post a little gallery of photos that I’ve set aside throughout the year. You may recognize a few of these from previous galleries here, but the majority of these pics are new. As with my personal site, there’s a random mix of stuff in this “scrapbook”. Enjoy!

A big shout out to everyone I know and to every new person I’ve met this year.

Get OWNED!

Looks like the dudes over at Props will be spicing things up next year, which is exciting to hear.

Head over there to check their new site and to read about OWNED.

Lagerfeld on Luxury

Even though the interviewer looks like Dimitri Martin playing a joke, this interview with Karl Lagerfeld is awesome. And even though he ironically admits to personally avoiding technology during an interview about how great the present (and the future, and technology) is, I think his point about the subjectivity of opinions on time periods in general is on point. Big picture. I like this guy.

Found on the Red Wing blog (bookmark it). Click below for the video.

Bonus: Me dressed as Karl for Halloween 2009.

Fred Blood

Even though the legend of Fred Blood was a bit before my time, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more fascinating BMX story than that of this ex-pro vert rollerskater.

Here is one of his old pro models on General Bikes. A few of these (a couple years old) were on my local shop’s showroom floor when I was growing up in Michigan, and their $200 price tag was very tempting while I was struggling to save for my $309 1990 Haro Master.

Here is a thread where his history is discussed, the end of which features a post from Blood himself, telling his own version. While most seem to question his talent as a pro Freestyler, there’s also the opinion that Fred utilized more than just his riding skills to be successful. Here’s an excerpt from his rebuttal:

“I worked the magazines everyday because my photo contingency maxed out at $10,000 a month and my contract maxed out at $300,000 a year plus co-sponsors and then show money and appearance money on top of that.”

Pending a little luck and the outcome of my Facebook friend request to Fred, perhaps we could get him on Defgrip to elaborate a bit on his glamourous history in 1980s BMX.
