IMO the 911 ( in any form 912, 996 etc) will never look bad, every body style change has been based upon performance, like jim said. form follows function. the 911 has a classic bodystyle and even though im not 100% into how physically large and heavy they are becoming, porsche has remained true on the classic look of the body.

its funny that the negative points of the 911 were afterthoughts to make it US safe. ( ie larger bumpers etc) maybe It was a conspiracy in the late 70s early 80s to hurt porsche sales. haha

IMO it all comes down to function. nothing will beat being able to floor it through a 90 degree corner, feel the rear end sit, and never loose traction. the 911 is the epitome of this feeling. ( although the 914 really might be the funnest to drive around a corner)

any porsche owner or enthusiast is a gentleman in my book (356 or slant nose, I don't care). I'm glad there are differing opinions within the porsche culture because this conversation has been the funnest part of my day so far. I will admit that I also despise chrome wheels on anything german.

Alec: slammed on the bumpstops, bare interior, 7 inch flares--all sound awesome!

Targa and whale tail, well you know... I like the Targa idea, and I like it on the newer models as the slope is not interrupted, but the way it changed the whole shape of the car on the older models is just way to much for my OCD. But I'm this neurotic about the details of a car that I don't even own, so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

...And you didn't say anything about sweatpants!

Mike said it well, but as the video was edited I believe the question was directed at what are the worst car offenses in general. I said wings and body kits directed at most other cars. Porsches come with wings that work, so usually OEM or similar is fine with me. I love the big wing on the GT3 and the 935 is basically ALL tail and body kit, which is awesome.

The whale tail is classic and iconic, but its pretty big for a non wide body(mine has SC flares) Like Alec said, perfect on 930. But a 930 with nothing is pretty sick too. Form follows function, and at high speeds Porsches need something to hold them down.

Chrome wheels are never ok though. ha.

I hope to make it Infineon some day, thanks for the invite!

ha, my car was Ardelean's worst nightmare. 79' TARGA sc, whale tail, basically on the bumpstops on the bilstien coilovers on all 4 corners, bare metal interior, full roll cage, big hole where the front right blinker should have been for the oil cooler, and the most tasteful addition had to have been the 7 inch flares! I don't have a ponytail.

In my very humble opinion, the beauty of the Porsche 911 lies in its simplicity and that amazing slope from the windshield to the rear bumper. Convertible tops, Targas, and yes, whale tails are a few of the abominations that interrupt that slope and ruin, again in my humble opinion, the very best thing about the car.

The beauty of the duck tail lies in its purpose: at a fraction of the weight of a whale tail, it provides the bare minimum of downforce needed, without dominating the car's appearance.

Like every car brand, Porsche has a unique and usually nerdy fan base. You've got the purists who won't change a thing, Jim who feels the way I do, and then the guys who love all the extra black plastic.

The funniest thing about being obsessed with cars is meeting other crazy characters who are also obsessed. For example, when Jim removed that heavy ass whale tale from his car and put it up for sale, the buyer was a sweatpants-wearing, ponytail-sporting gentleman who was looking to ADD to his car, rather than subtract from it, all of the extras (chrome wheels, impact bumpers, whale tail) that most can't wait to get rid of.

Personally I wouldn't be caught dead with any of that stuff on my car, but I'm fascinated by the cars and the people who like them, and I'd have a beer with any of the above described enthusiasts any time. It takes all kinds.
