So, the holidays are over, the dust has settled, and we have a final round of “Best Of’s” for 2008! There has been a really good buzz and a lot of excitement going around through the first few days of 2009 and I really hope it continues throughout the year!
*Edit – John Taylor and Aaron Ross have been added at the end of the post!

This is a photo I took in my travels while I was in Brazil. This photo makes me realize where BMX has and can take me. Makes you think about how you can’t take things for granted. This is a photo of the mega ramp rollin’ in Sao Paulo Brazil’s sunset.

For me, the most memorable Experience of 2008 would have to be self discovery and good luck.
In early 2008 I embarked on a Solo road trip from Minnesota to NYC. The entire trip took me 13 days and 3800 miles on the car pictured here. When I left Minnesota it had 215,000 + miles on it. I had no map, no GPS, No Time line and no plan, other than to get to NYC on a certain day so I could turn around and come back again. I made it to NYC so I could give MTV my “hey you’re number one.” Spending 13 days and 3800 miles by yourself really expands your point of view about yourself and others. I did manage to get some riding in, both in the USA and in Canada. I met a lot of really cool people, at the same time I met a lot of really weird people.
As for the luck part? Look at that car, and all the miles it had. That’s the only problem I had the entire trip, and it’s because my high ass left the interior light on all night.
I also had the privilege to go on Mega tour in September. I was lucky and I had no business being on a road trip with the people I was on it with. So having that opportunity was definitely a highlight of 2008.

Sorry this is late, I had to think about it for a while. And what I came up with is that I was thankful to be able to go to one last Mets game at Shea Stadium with my folks. They were the ones who first took me there 30 or so years ago and made me a lifelong Mets fan (gee, thanks a lot), so it was cool to get there one more time with them. Shea may have been old and dingy, but it had something that no new stadium will ever be able to replicate. I’m sure a BMX analogy could be made, but I’ll let someone else make it.

Best thing for me in 08′ is my cat smokey! I got him in September around my birthday and its been great to have my little bud around. I actually almost lost him late November when he was hit by a car, but I did what I had to do to get him surgery and he was saved and is recovering well. I’m sooo lucky. Sorry if you didn’t get a gift from me this year all of my doe is going to Smokey’s bills! Happy 2009 Defgrip BMXers and artists from Randy Taylor.

By far one of the best things to happen in 08′ is the building of the Podium Distribution Private Skatepark. No crowds, no snakes, no punk ass kids skipping around on scooters, no ketchup packets, haters down by 95%, no rain and sometimes even no lights. Also having the opportunity to invite and ride with some of the best in freestyle… Golden. With the economy plummeting… my tables are skyrocketing. Good times for sure!

It seems these days I spend more times on planes than I spent working on them years ago, but whilst they are a thing of beauty, they scare the crap out of me. I am not an avid supporter of turbulence and the fact that on days, like the photo above, they think it s perfectly alright to take off and get us all from A to B. So in future when people say that I am crazy (referring to riding a BMX bike) I will agree because I must have been out of my mind that day when I boarded the plane. It was a wild ride!

It all started with a call from Stu Dawkins asking if I would be into moving down Brighton for a few months, it was around December when he called and I remember spending a NSF trip down in Brighton, hitting up places to ride and the beach at night for Olly’s Birthday. Good memories were held there, so to move down for a few months and be part of the epic Brighton Aint Ready project was a bit of a no brainer. During my stay I met some of the best characters that BMX has to offer. Stand out guys had to be Nate Moroshan from Primo/Volume and all the guys from Subrosa, Ryan, Eli, Hoang (and his crazy flick knife) they all ruled. Some good memories and friends were made during my stay in the BAR House. Lets hope that 2009 can bring so many more good times again.

Dogs! I got a dog this year and watching the little rug rat grow up was a daily highlight for me in 2008. If you want something more BMX specific, I got two words… Daddy-Vision!!!
Dave Jacobs – Micreation
My girlfriend’s mom runs the Good Year blimp on the west coast, so I got a chance to take a ride. It was pretty wild. That definitely sticks out in 2008 for me.
Chris Moeller – S&M Bikes
The S&M team was the highlight of 2008 for me. Having a crew of guys you like to rep what you’re all about is the best. I Wanna Live came out great and I think the guys really sum up what S&M is all about, having fun riding bikes and doing it your way.
Walter Pierenger – Photographer/Filmer
THE DESERT – In April, Hanson Little and I embarked on a 5-day, 2000+ mile desert camping / exploration trip through Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California. It was unbelievable. We saw some of the most fascinating places and interacted with the some of the most bizarre people one could ever hope to encounter. I love the desert. I believe we decided the story behind the scene in this photo was that the dog got tired and couldn’t pull the bus any further, so that’s where they decided to set up camp.
Mark Lewman – Pioneer
Moved to Portland and became a partner at Nemo.
New house. New hood.
Went to Beijing, twice.
Did a pretty fun art show.
Published a book.
Took Hannah to her first rock show (Weezer), got her onstage to play
two songs with the band for the oncore.
Saw Tuesday come up as an artist and soccer player.
Did a short film with Bob Stephenson, Meza and Johannes.
Wrote a screenplay with Cliver.
Pulled a few Gs on an Olympic bobseld run.
Worked with good friends on good stuff pretty much every day.
Talked way out of speeding ticket.
Filled a few notebooks with randomness.

So 2008 was an amazing year! There is many things I could talk about and it’s really hard to choose one specific thing. 2008 brought BMX street riding to a whole new level not only in riding but in the X-Games contest, seeing real street riders going home with real medals is an unreal idea…. then there was the ESPYs….. To walk down the red carpet at an ESPN event next to some of the Sports world greatest athletes of all time was weird since i ride a little kids BMX bike…. makes no sense! Lastly, as a little kid growing up riding BMX, i would’ve never imagined i’d have the chance to design a shoe…. so looking back 2008 was an amazing year in life and in the BMX world and i cant wait so see what happens in 2009… good luck to you all and go outside and have some fun!!!
