Here is a shot of Gary Young doing one of his favorite moves: “The Tabes.”
I used my Holga 120 to shoot this on Ilford 400 film while Jeremy Pavia was shooting Gary from up top as an alternate angle for the BMX Plus! cover a couple months ago – their 30th anniversary issue.
I was filming the riding for a “behind the scenes video” I did for bnqt.com and was just snapping photos because at this point the video camera was on a tripod. Jeremy was shooting from on top the bank and was getting the sunset and yachts in the background- aka the money shot.
I’ve been psyched on Holga camera since 2002 when I got my first one at an antique store and later on found out that it actually worked. I’ve had six since then and half of the hot-shoes have quit working relatively soon. The Holga 120 CFN I used was bought from Urban Outfitters when I tried to purchase this HOLGA book, which was lying around loose and when I brought it to the cashier they said it wasn’t sold seperately and someone else brought me a larger box with the book and this red camera inside. It cost me $80 for the kit, but the book is awesome so it was well worth it for me b/c I goon out on that kind of stuff. And when I got the camera home I found out that it matched my Odsy bars and forks as an added bonus. Anyway, the spot is down by th San Diego Airport and this chain gap into the bank is a famous skate spot. Speaking of skate, Gary, give me back my copy of Ride The Sky.
