TELL US HOW THE NIKE VIDEO CAME ABOUT.
Mark Losey became the Nike TM, and as far as I know they wanted to put out a video. I’ve worked with Mark for years at Transworld, so I guess when it came to needing a camera man he felt like hooking a bro up! The Video has gone through many changes through the past year of filming, but the end product will speak for itself!
ARE YOU IN CHARGE OF PRODUCTION THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH?
No, definetely not. Mark Losey was the Producer, and Nike people are the executive producers. My role changed through out the whole process. Basically, I was the main camera person, and responsible for some of the editing.
WITH THIS VIDEO BEING NIKE’S FIRST SHOWING, WAS THERE ANY SELF IMPOSED PRESSURE PUT ON YOURSELF, OR WERE YOU ABLE TO JUST ROLL WITH IT?
At first, I suppose I thought “WOW a Nike video”, but as time went on, it became more evident that this was going to be a more straight forward video. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing. Nike threw down for this video, we went on some awesome trips. I just think when people, like me, hear “Nike” they are going to expect “big” intros and something really insane out of the ordinary. If you are looking for something “crazy”, you’ll find it in the riding!
WHAT CAMERA/CAMERAS ARE YOU USING?
I use a Canon XH-A1 and Nike purchased a HVX for Losey. A few shots of Dennis and Nigel were shot with a DVX2100.
WHO IS BEHIND THE SCENES ON THIS PROJECT, AND DID YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH ANY RED TAPE/GUIDELINES ETC… FROM NIKE?
For the Most part I dealt with Mark Losey, so he was my boss on the video. I’ve met a bunch of the people at Nike, but most of the direction came from Mark. There wasn’t any red tape, but there were plenty of early requests for advance edits and recaps from trips. That’s not something you normally have to do in BMX, but it’s a good way to let the people paying you that something is getting done. To be honest, I think the Nike people were just psyched to see the footage. They really like the riders! It’s actually pretty cool. I think The BMX guys are pretty favored at 6.0, which in some way I think is a good reflection on BMX.
WHERE WE’RE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU GUYS FILMED?
Spain, Australia, China, Philly, Cali, NY, Atlanta, Miami, NC, Vegas…it was pretty awesome!
WAS THERE ANY SPOT/COUNTRY THAT YOU OR THE CREW ENJOYED MOST?
Spain and Australia…Probably Australia even a little more. The trips were typically shorter than your average “road trip”. They needed to work around school schedules and contests. So every trip was very RIDE, RIDE, RIDE, get shit done! Australia had a bunch of rain days, so we all got to hang out a lil’ more which was fun! We came back with just as much footage from there as any other trip even with three days rained out. Actually as I type this, every trip was fun, those guys are a fun group of dudes to travel with!
WITH ALL OF THE INTERNATIONAL TRAVELLING, THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME BALL-UPS. CARE TO SHARE ANY STORIES?
Seriously, everything went smooth! No major bag loss, no one ever got seriously hurt, everyone gets along. I think Mark had a really tough time getting trips set up. To set up 4 to 6 days for all four of the team guys to get travel dates that work at the same time, was way more challenging than anyone could imagine. Once it was set up though, everything went great. On a lot of trips I wouldn’t get a plane ticket until two or three days before the trip, that’s how tight the ship was!
NEEDLESS TO SAY, GARRETT, NIGEL, SPINNER AND DENNIS ARE ALL UNIQUE RIDERS. HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT SWITCHING GEARS BETWEEN THE RIDERS AND THEIR RIDING STYLE? DO YOU APPROACH EACH ONE DIFFERENTLY?
Well yeah, in that sense all riders are different and need to be approached differently. These guys are all super supportive of each other, so on the trips when we were all together it never felt like I was filming, it felt like there was always a full crew behind me working with each rider. Most of the time spent with them is just joking and clowning around, none of them stress to hard, Garrett will fall right on his face and you can say nice move asshole…he’ll just laugh…That was the vibe the whole time.
FOR ME PERSONALLY, I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING SPINNER’S SECTION SINCE I MOSTLY SEE CONTEST FOOTAGE OF HIM. DO YOU THINK HIS SECTION WILL OPEN PEOPLE EYES?
I hope so. Spinner is a contest guy, there is no doubt about it. Before he became the Mike Spinner we all see on TV, he was and is a rider just like any of us. Just a small example: Spinner don’t run pegs, he hasn’t in a LONG time, that’s not his thing. In Spain when we were filming a line with Nigel, Spinner grabbed my bike and was feebling this little metal ledge all night. He was having fun, and he even asked to get a picture cause that’s how much fun he was having. You’ll see a 1080 and a quad whip in his section but I think people will be surprised and psyched on his street lines. I know he’s pretty proud of it!
AFTER SPENDING SO MUCH TIME WITH THE RIDERS, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT GARRETT, NIGEL, SPINNER AND DENNIS?
Nigel I already knew for a while and I consider him a friend for life. I did learn that Nigel has a problem staying awake, but outside of that, I can already tell you Nigel is one of the best people you will ever know.
As for the rest of the guys, wow! I just spent a little over a year traveling with these guys, we’ve been all over the world. I feel like they are family. I’m going to miss them now that the video is over. Spinner is a good guy, I think there’s always a little hate for the contest guys, but hey he’s good at it and he loves it! Dennis is crazy, anyone who knows him knows what I mean. I don’t think that has come across yet. I can’t give away his “banger”, but know this, it’s not only INSANE, he decided he needed to do it with a cheap pair of 3 dollar sunglasses on! Him I won’t miss because there’s a rumor I’m doing a Haro Video. If Tony D calls me back that might happen. If anyone see’s Tony D. at Haro have him call me!!!
Garrett is awesome! First and foremost he is the best rider I have ever seen! Besides that, this guy has a big heart, he’s all about his friends and he really is just trying to have a good time.
They are a great group of guys!
FILL US IN ON THE MUSIC CLEARANCE NIGHTMARE THAT YOU GUYS MUST BE GOING THROUGH.
Not really my deal on this, but yes they had huge concerns and issues. Bottom line they are Nike and when they approach labels, labels smell MONEY, cha ching! The reality is, Nike put a hefty budget on these guys and a healthy amount of money towards music, like every other video, music clearance sucks!!!!
AND TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT, WAS THERE SOMETHING YOU MISSED FILMING THAT YOU ARE KICKING YOURSELF IN THE ASS ABOUT?
Actually nothing I missed, but this one line of Garrett, I was flying behind him then he goes down an 8 stair, I was on blades and got mad shaky on the stop. It pisssed me off so much, every time I see that clip I cringe
WHEN WILL THE VIDEO BE RELEASED?
November 22 I believe, and there is a premiere in San Diego.
THANKS GLENN! ANY THANK YOU’S OR ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ADD?
Just say thanks to you guys for the interview, and thanks to everyone at Nike, the team guys, and everyone who made every trip as fun as it was!
